Crankshaft drives a school bus in Funky Winkerbean's town.
He's not the bestest driver when he mows a mailbox down.
The wonder is the school-board hasn't fired the curmudgeon.
But 'neath his gruff demeanor, he really does love children.

He's been at it for three decades, and was old when he began.
At his age he still drives buses, not even just a basic van.
He can tell you lots of stories, like when he was a tyro driver,
He caught a rattler in a rainstorm, used it as a window viper.

One Thanksgiving, tired of turkey, he snuck in a tuna sandwich,
He was busted by his grand-daughter, who he called a snitch.
But when thanks were recited, her name he still included.
Crankshaft may be cranky, yet at times his love exuded.

Amazing how you get the longest poems from the shortest solutions.
This is a charming story, and I especially admire the way you worked that first word in. Not to mention how the solution showed up.

The jumble was indeed short and sweet. Not so sweet, actually, but definitely short.
Only problem was, of all things, clue 2, that I had to reorganize and write down my standard way: alphabetically with vowels first, then consonants. Worked right away, and voila! The solution appeared.

The first half of this poem is real, the second half is from my own head.

What a surprise to see a cartoon in a Jumble! Are they going to have guest Jumblers every now and then from now on? I like Crankshaft, and it was fun to see you make a poem out of it, Owen--thank you for that too. I had no problems with the items, and figured out the solution without even looking at the letters. Very clever and fun. Thanks, everybody. (Just noticed all my "thanks." Must be Thanksgiving coming up that's causing that).

I got the four pretty quickly but couldn't Grok the riddle right away. When I finally jotted down letters it came.

The second"word" not being a word threw me .

If you do any kind of van or bus work mail BOXES are similar to mail MEN for dogs .

And, I delivered mail over Christmas when dogs ran loose . Oh the tails I could tell.

They've had a guest artist week before, so it's probably an annual thing. Some other comic strips do it too. Probably exchanges. Watch Crankshaft and Reality Check this week for guests. Reality Check is a single panel with no continuity, so guests should be easy there.
