The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Cryptic clues:
Whispered sweet // music.
Excessively /on the/ down low in May.
Delta, for example, /said to/ let her.
Jay held lopped front half /of/ dilapidated old car.
Jay umpired bat hit when leaders lost /who/ leaped for it.
Not a tough jumble, though the fourth clue gave me a moment's pause. But the solution came even before the clue. Lived up to itself, so to speak.
A note here: My second great-grandson was just born, about an hour and fifteen minutes ago, Pacific time. So not a leap day birthday. Baby and mother doing fine.
Happy Leap Year Day, fellow Jumblelayas!
(Is "Happy" the appropriate greeting? Or is the occasion too infrequent to have an established salutation?)
Sandy ~ Congratulations on the arrival of your new grandson! Glad to hear mom & baby are thriving. What gladsome news! I wonder if you need be so precise about the birth time; what fun it must be to celebrate a birthday every four years--like Frederic in Pirates of Penzance.
Wilbur ~ FLN: Just checking to be sure you saw my post--on yesterday's poem?

Nat, the improv partner (who had a rep for being a "bright ad libber") stole a look at Zak's notes, then planned a cool zinger to use in response to Zak's best gag.
But during the show Zak dumped that bit and so stumped Nat's wit.
But hey--That's show biz...

OMK, yes, I commented. Thanks a "whole" lot.
Owen, yes, please be my guest and take care of Sunday. The group will love to see your poetic talents. And...
Yes, I instantly realized that #4 was not going to be an apt vehicle for middle Earth Hobbit talk.
So....
I offer this vignette as I hold back a tear .
It was love at first sight for Will and Polly
They'd ride around town in his '54 jalopy
When she first showed interest he fell madly.
When he later got her letter he felt badly
He'd jumped at the chance to be her suiter
In his eyes there was no girl cuter
But back in college in her dorm REZ*
She found a new beau. Will, loneliness.

* From yesterday's CC
Ps, dedicated to Sandy - may her new great grandson find love, happiness in the arms of a great family.
Congratulations on the arrival of your second great-grandson, Sandyanon. Since my only grandson is only 15, it will be a while before I become a great-grandmother.
After struggling with a tough Saturday puzzle, this Jumble was a total delight. Like Sandyanon, it took just a moment to get the fourth item, and the solution popped (can't use the actual word) right up. So, a great gift on an otherwise tough puzzle day. And I love the colors in the cartoon, so cool against the green earth down below.
Sandy -- Congratulations! Pretend he'd been born a time-zone further west -- a leap-day birthday would be soo [sic] cool! I see you already have his picture as your avatar! (Clarinda was Sidney Rigdon's wife. I was a Mormon for 17 years, including a year at BYU. Are you a descendant of hers?)
Wilbur - you want me to do both Sundays, or just the J4? I think I can handle both. I need to get back into practice. I only did 3 CC poems total this past week.
Misty -- sure you could have used the actual words. Using the actual words is madly encouraged, as long as you don't point out that they are the actual letter-for-letter words!
Sorry, Wilbur, I think you meant me instead of Owen yesterday when you "commented." Of course I wasn't sure.

Thanks, Owen.
I think it must have been a different Clarinda. Mine was originally from Kentucky and moved to Indiana, married name Botkin. One of my great grandmothers. Family story that she was a little bit Mohawk; wish I could verify it.
Owen, please do the two poems tomorrow. Bilbo needs to rest from his ordeal.
OMK, timezones may throw off the timing of posts and comments. I appreciate that you or anyone like my little doggerel. I look forward to the old pro shagging some flies tomorrow.

Owen, I just saw a post from a few days ago. I usually check any late posts before posting myself but I completely missed the thumbs.
I had the same thought. The cryptics are clever and entertaining but there not the full use of your talents. I've had a good run with Bilbo and I'm glad to retire.

Of course, I'm always in the bullpen if needed
Thank you, Owen, for the clarification about using Jumble words in comments. I'll keep it in mind.
Cryptic solutions:
sweet homophone = SUITE
D(own) L(ow) < MAY = MADLY
let her homophone = LETTER
JAY > LOP(ped) = JALOPY
J + UMPED + (b)AT (h)IT = JUMPED AT IT
