Does that solution just seem like a normal statement to you? Because that's how it seems to me -- no symbolic meaning, not punny, not funny, just a regular statement.

It's the incongruity. "I remember when I got amnesia..."
"Able to Remember?"
Plus or minus symbols are one way
to offer deviations from the normal.
If we need to note an exacter sway
off mean, number scales are more formal.
I explained this to my Aussie Mist, "Abate."

Try as he might, pray as he might, Chet's feelings would not abate
An otherwise normal guy he saw Lois as a perfect mate
She too has an anniversary soon , perhaps he could offer
A symbol, ideally one that wouldn't drain his limited coffers
Something memorable , something cheap costing little money
He found it at a gift shop. A charm with the perfect word:

Sadly, I have a 9 am Joyce Foundation Trustees meeting, and won't be able to have a Jumble verse or poem ready by then. I'll try to work on it after the meeting is over, but also have phone meetings with my son and a friend later, and so I may not be able to check back in until sometime in the afternoon. My apologies, but so glad to see two great poems already posted, so we are on the way.
You had us fooled, Wilbur. But now it looks like Chet won't leave well enough alone.
Or, to follow my theme, he can't let sleeping cats be.
I understand it's hard being in his shoes. The thing is bigger than the two of them, right?
"Harmony" is most suggestive--a response to inner chaos.
Is Lois aware of any of this? What would her sponsor say?
Do sponsors talk to one another about their subjects? Do they need permission?

Chet is struggling with his feelings for Lois, and I hope that he manages to keep them under control. The little charm doesn't seem out of line, since it's an annversary for Lois, but he needs to watch himself ad not go any further. Good luck, Chet!
"Brief Fortune"
When Frederic inherited a fortune,
he looked forward to much future fun.
But first he had to deal with an offer
to buy a secure and strong coffer.
Turned out wealth is a highly prized symbol
that makes management not very nimble.
All his social events became formal
and he began to really miss his old normal,
and his pleasure in his new estate
quickly began to abate.
So he gave most of his money to charity
in the hope this would give him some clarity.
It worked, and with his fortune ephemeral,
he was happy to have it just be memorable.
P.S. This is actually just a fantasy Frederic invented when a friend of his got lots of money and left town and was never heard of again.

Your poem expresses a sophisticated fantasy, with your Frederic handling his windfall fortune in a way many of us find spiritually satisfying but... er, well, perhaps beyond our various strengths of character to fulfill.
And then, LOL, you doubled back to assure us it would likely have been beyond Frederic's actual ability as well!

Wilbur, next week is the Joyce week of the year, and Wednesday is Bloomsday--our major holiday. I believe I am on a panel to honor a wonderful Joyce scholar we lost this year, and we are each going to give him a tribute for a few minutes. But the day before, June 15, I'm scheduled to give a 20 minute speech on James Joyce's collection of short stories called "Dubliners." I'll be discussing "obscure characters" in those stories, ones we hardly notice and who appear to be insignificant, but sometimes aren't. Thank you for asking.
