Sometimes the solution just jumps out at you, doesn't it?
I owe David and Jeff a lot of thanks; a relief after guest jumblers.
Leo wanted the world to see,
So he signed up to go to sea!
The merchant marine fit his style,
So that's where he would be awhile!
Our brash fellow signed a hitch
To go to sea for a three month trip!
When he crossed the equator first time
A bottle was uncorked to douse him in wine!
When his time was up, he headed inland
Traded sea legs for an easier stand!
But he had built friendships in the ranks,
He left his buddies with a bunch of thanks!
An imaginative storyteller has an impulse to write of a larger than life figure, a giant of a world traveler.
In order to remember his idea, he…
”Banks the Hunch”
‘Tis not in Cork but farther inland
they tell of the Big Brash Boyo!
He hitches on clouds across to Greenland
& down to a Spanish arroyo.
Mere continents are naught to him;
he hops the alps on a single limb,
& lands in Egypt, no need of a swim.
(His feats out-freak die Brüder Grimm.)
And that’s our smash ‘n’ crash Boyo!

I have fond memories of Thanksgiving back when I was a child
Uncle Lefty, Sprockett that is, would come for lunch
Dad told me, "Lefty was brash but equally was wild"
When he uncorked a beauty his coach'd say, "Thanks a bunch!"
"He'd hitched on with a team inland from Bangor
Everywhere he pitched the result was anguish and rancor
Did he indeed get a cup of coffee in the Bigs? Boston perchance
But brash and wild are not ingredients for success in the Big Dance"

"Thanksgiving Day"
Today is a day to give thanks
for blessings in all of our ranks.
We'll celebrate not a bunch of lunch
but dinner, with a turkey to munch.
The opening speech will not be brash
and not focus on money or cash,
for even if we're not rich
we have thanks to hitch and pitch.
When that's done, while we pass the dressings
we'll be grateful for all our blessings.
And while we uncork our bottle of wine
we'll be thankful for this inland time.

Can’t say if I‘ll be back today, as we’re prepping for a visit from the grandkids.

Lefty is a legendary pitcher of the first decades of the 19th Century. Norm Nathan of Boston radio fame would tell "Lefty" stories and much like Sherlock fans I wrote a few pastiche.

Yep , I'm a lefty and we're a quixotic bunch. One friend who'd been around said that I was the uniquest guy he'd known.

The merchant marine is not the same as the Marines. The mm is just civilian sailors who crew transport ships. They sign up for just one or a few voyages at a time. The Marines are a military service that demands at least a 2-year commitment.
