Wars were raging around the globe,
Flames of hatred that couldn't be doused!
Scouts were sent, their foes to probe,
Champions met in the fields to joust!

Battle-lines were ranked, front to back,
Soldiers trembled, for carnage to come.
Wars were fought on horse-back, half-track,
With spears and arrows and bullets from gun.

Then came the aliens from who knows where!
The wars were closed, the armies united!
A common enemy they would now share,
Creatures who invaded, uninvited!

At least, that's what humanity thought
Except for a pacifistic ubiquitous cadre!
The invaders always struck so far off.
What irony, gods so good made men miscarry;
Devils caused peace, although imaginary!

Owen, I hope Cornerites are (auditing) your stories on this blog. They are exceptional.

I got 1, 2, 4 and the S easily, but had the wrong letter to end 3.

Enjoyed your poem, Owen.

Today's Jumble was a breeze. I got all four answers without any problems, and then the reveal just fell into place beautifully. A very good experience. Also got the crossword puzzle and Sudoku without any problems, but for the first time in ages had to erase the Kenken and start over again, because it just wasn't working. What would I do without puzzles in my seniority?

This may have been the breeziest of all! But somehow, the last word of the final answer doesn't feel right.
I know it's correct, part of a very old expression, but something in me wants a punchier climax - maybe a comparative or superlative ending.
The German equivalent (So weit, sehr gerne!) just feels better. Best?
Ah, well ...
Whatcha gonna do?

I like saying your poetry aloud, but you gotta admit "pacifistic ubiquitous cadre" is a mouthful.

#1,#2 went real quick . I actually did it while getting an oil change and wallet soaking . Talked me into synthetic and coolant flush .

I thought DOGS would he there. I was missing the A since I didn't have my reading glasses on .

The one I have to start over is Sudoku

Ol'Man Keith, okay, not best, but pretty good, don't you think, for a Tuesday puzzle? I loved it.

Reminds me of a Deighton ditty which I retell . My grandfather was a window washer and one day back in '29 he looks up and there's Charlie flying downwards having jumped from the fiftieth floor .

Not thinking he says " Hi Charles, How's it going?"

And Charlie responds as he falls past
" So far, So good"

I'll see myself out
