Today’s Jumble haiku:
(The owner’s going chi-chi, hiring only Frenchie types, putting exotic chefs to work at…)
”Booking new Cooks”
For glossy cartes of
oriole-stuffed skunks, blocks of snails
with stinky rat paws…

(Did you get this one too, CanadianEh?)
Hard to believe it, but today’s W’s at risk
of redundancy. After I finish slurping my bisque,
I shall point out its likeness to Monday’s “….. .”

Should we whisper what this one's about?
A type of broom no umpire is without?
Cleaning up at home,
Or whiskey's spilled foam,
Or taking a batter's lumpiness out.

Yes OMK, I too was amazed to see that we need to get rid of our vipers again today. (The Bot keeps removing this comment when I post it with my W result)
A “Help Wanted” sign has gone up in the neighbourhood as our animal friends fatten up for the winter. We are . . .
Booking the Cooks
Our vipers we whisked away,
But the skunk is here to stay;
The oriole with glossy feathers
Remains despite the weather.
The whole block is full until May;
They plan to hibernate together.
Owen- your W poem gives many definitions of the word (plus disguises it in the Crown Royal. I must admit that I was temporarily stymied by the batter in the last line, thinking of baseball. Then the kitchen light came on.
OMK- where else could we go with our J title. But I give you a whimsical animal tale, while yours is more sinister. I think I will avoid those exotic chefs. My stomach cannot handle “oriole-stuffed skunks”, let alone “stinky rat paws”. Yuck.
"Animal Lover"
The neighbors on Betty's block
were aware that she had a flock
that included orioles and moles
and a skunk and even some foals.
Her back yard was large and mossy,
and her animal care was glossy.
Her cooking gave her pets good looks,
and she featured them all in her books.
Misty- your Betty was a lady of many talents, and what a variety of species she had in her flock. I’m sure that her books were tremendous. Were they aimed at children or adults?
While I agree, CanadianEh, that your piece is more whimsical, I would not call mine "sinister."
I take my cue from French restaurants I have frequented, where I know escargot are served with all sorts of accompaniments and--especially down in New Orleans--the chefs are apt to stuff anything with anything else!
I knew we would be going the same way with that Spooner-begging title. It was only a matter of flipping the backstory. I agree, yours is nicer. But I had my eye on creating jobs.
As for W-words, we can only wonder what tomorrow will bring...?!
Misty ~ My, that was a LOT of animals in Betty's yard.
I have a hunch that the phrase "were aware" is a euphemism for "circulated a petition against."
I mean, how long could you--or any other neighbor--stand the noise and odors emanating from Ms. Betty's sanctuary? Even in the service of Agra-Lit, a librarian would be hard pressed to live next door to such a menagerie.

We go in a lot of different directions today, don't we?
Owen, your umpire seems like a tidy guy willing to do a set of chores.
CanadianEh!, our neighborhoods both seem to be pretty animal-friendly, don't they? Even with a lot of different critters. No problem, if they're all okay with that. And I'll have to ask Betty who her book readers are?
Ol' Man Keith, I think you shouldn't move into a neighborhood like Betty's. The noise and the smell would drive you crazy, and you'd be trying to get action to make her get her animal household under better control. Not unreasonable, but I hope it doesn't make Betty too unhappy.
Well, let's all look forward to a good supper and a cheerful evening tonight!
