|| || irony, piano, gladly, tumble, bad timing.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

"Gladly would I pay you Thursday for a hamburger today"
This was a catchphrase that was well-known in its way.
But it was only funny if it was Wimpy who had the say.

So many classic laughs are anchored with the past.
That today's generation will find difficult to grasp,
From when there were fewer networks to broadcast.

Then the same shows were seen by half the nation.
"I'm thinking, I'm thinking" needed no explanation,
All knew the comic irony of Benny's situation.

If things tumbled from a closet, a bell was chiming.
Gracie was always silly, George never had bad timing.
To everyone "Piano Movers" was Stan and Ollie climbing.

Happy memories, Owen!
They all ring bells--and you're right that we used to share the same programs, in radio days & early TV.
Neat how you slipped the solution into the last stanza.

I like this poem and find it very clever. But alas, I have only partial memories of some of the citations. Remember Wimpy well and his fondness for hamburgers, but not the saying. Jack Benny and Burns and Allen are very clear memories. So are Laurel and Hardy, but not really any piano moving. I was definitely not paying enough attention.

My sharpest memory is that apparently everyone in the world (well, my world) watched I Love Lucy on Monday nights.

The jumble came pretty easily, though I did have to write out the letters for clue three. But the solution was obvious once the letters were there.
