The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Rabbit, rabbit.
Today's Jumble was another stinker! After 35 minutes, I gave up and had to ask for two hints! I almost never have to ask for even one, so four over two days is, well...beyond words!
Angus was gone on vacation, the firehouse was abuzz.
As the station's prankster, he garnered little love.
There was the time, to celebrate, he brought cigars, a box.
The one that Charlie picked exploded, singed his eyebrows off!
There was the itching powder at the rear of Jimmy's helmet.
Sprinkled down his back next call, he recalls the hell yet!
Biscuit dough in Ernie's shoes, felt spongy when he walked.
Held his feet like glue at day's end, even thru his socks!
So during this hiatus, the scientists of the crew
Put their heads together, about what pranks to do.
When Angus returned, he sighed at what he should expect.
He knew they planted something, but he became a nervous wreck!
He saw their smirks, heard their taunts that it would funny.
That was their prank, because their prank was -- there wasn't any!
Well, I had problems with the third word again this morning, and once again, Owen, your delightful poem--with its fun ending--helped me out with that. But even with all the letters, I just couldn't get the Jumble cartoon solution. Guess I'm just not great with science, so had to look up the answer. And I don't entirely get the cartoon--what is that circular thing in the background? Fusion experiments are just not in my wheelhouse, I guess.
Have a good Thursday, everybody.
Hi. I'm back, sort of. Have been having recurring eye and allergy problems. To add to it, the really bad heat in SoCal for some days just drained me. I don't live right on the coast in Seal Beach, but have never felt a need for air conditioning where I am. If it keeps getting hotter oftener, I may, though. Anyway, it's been much better lately, and so have I.
I also found this jumble difficult. Got the first, four-letter, part of the solution, but after staring at the rest of the letters for awhile, just gave up and looked on an answer site. Continuing low energy level is my only excuse. I didn't think it was an especially brilliant pun, though; it didn't seem to me that it fit smoothly with the rest of the caption. But I am sort of a grammar/style noodge, so . . .
Really like the poem, Owen. A couple of quite ingenious pranks after the initial one. It kind of reminded me of an old Mash episode, where Angus was Hawkeye. And I'll bet that first clue word was what gave you the general idea.
So glad you're back, Sandyanon--we missed you.
Rabbita, rabbita, rabbita....
The sound my old motorcycle used to make, before the cylinders caught.
Good to see you, Sandy! Sorry the heat is getting to you. We consider ourselves lucky here in Irvine. Certainly better than the eastern half of the nation. Low 80s, with a gentle breeze. We used to boast of our "Mediterranean" climate here, but oh, now we're much better than that!
Neat poem, Owen, despite your difficulty w/ the jumble. I am still working on the *#@! thing. I don't go for hints, so I'll probably be late with this one.

Welcome back, Sandy! Sounds like we might still miss you a few days over the rest of the summer when the weather disagrees with you, but we'll keep you warm in our thoughts.
As for what inspired the poem idea, which was so well supported by today's words, I bid you read Sunday's J4 poem, then Monday and Tuesday's as well.
The device in the cartoon is an atom smasher. Magnets along the sides speed up an electron inside each time it goes around the loop, and also on a curved path, until it hits a target atom, like a cue ball at a break! But you'll notice smoke curling up from it, where it burned out the magnets.
I also liked the right-hand screen of a very early iMac with a frowny face.
Oh, and Wednesday's, too. I forgot today was Thursday.
The thing is, with this one, that you can have several solutions. But so far none of them are clever enough--or amusing.
I may be missing some sound-alike gag. We shall see.

PS. Anybody ever sue Hoyt & Knurek for "mental torment"?
I waited and waited to get #3. Not to speak of the riddle.
We had HIATUS before, I think, and I think I got it then. I had horrific problems with the CC xword too. Does my brain need days off?
Sandy good to see you. Who was "Angus" in MASH again?
WC
Nah. I got "Sigh," but did not think a solution could include a non-word ("entists") as part of the answer. I guess I've let myself become spoiled by the times they've made a real word do double duty.
Ah, well... Kinda clever.
