When you go to clear a swamp of alligators,
Beware of lawyers and alleged litigators!
They will clamp you in jaws like a fetter,
Drag you thru the murk to where it's wetter!

Only one of noble heart could do the job.
But it's dirty work fit only for a yob.
You need oomph to push any concept new,
And a clear vision to see just what to do!

Once you define corruption to the throng
Then maybe it will be time to right a wrong.
But if recent history is a valid indication,
Integrity may have already left the station!

The first word today gave me trouble, even tho it's one that has occurred before. A double letter at the start of a word is just so rare! Then the contorted solution was a effort. Better, how about
Their old car had broken down again -- OOOO OO OO? (They) "OOO".

Wilbur ~ I'm sure you meant the The Rivals, the play with Mrs Malaprop, as there is no "Spooner" play. (I'm not counting Spoon River Anthology as that has nothing to do with the good Rev. Spooner, the eponymous spawner of the wordplay.)
And no, I never had anything directly to do with The Rivals, although I've seen it two or three times. It holds up nicely. I recall one production in particular that rec'd much laughter.

Wow, Owen! Great poems both here and on the Corner. Politics was just too hard to resist --- I bet swamp got you going, not to speak of cahoots.

The jumble clues weren't difficult, though I did have to think outside the box to get the first one. Took awhile. I wasn't enamored of the solution; it doesn't seem naturally constructed, with the pun out of place in the sentence. ???

I'm with Sandy in praising your audacity, Owen! You display your usual brilliant variety today, but the political penetration stands out. You capture the prevailing cynicism well. Let us hope the public response to the showdown between integrity and devotion to duty on the one side and selfish "thuggery" on the other resolves in a rebirth of old-fashioned honor.

The jumble solution is a flat disappointment. I prefer to tell the tale of the murderous chef who, after hacking an under-cook to pieces, hid inside a meat locker where the chill combined with his guilt to have him wracked with sobs. The responding detective found him instantly, with no other clue but "boo hoo."

Re. "The Rivals". That featured Mrs Malaprop and was indeed what I was thinking. She mixed up words; Rev. Spooner mixed up consonants.

Then apparently there are eggcorns and mondegreens . I recall thinking there was a Don Q. Shane (DANKE Shoen).

In fact I just linked "ALICE" from Anon-T and the lyrics accompanied Grace Slick and I see I had that song completely mixed up.

Sorry I missed commenting on the Jumble this morning, and I'm afraid I'll miss tomorrow morning as well. But I'll try to get back on Monday, if I can.
