A knight errant in days of yore
On a quest, would be looking for
A holy grail, a damsel in travail,
Or a bargain on good chain-mail.
He must be noble, always act square,
And also modest, live on simple fare.
He must be honest, and keep his word,
Not stretch truth like a bungee cord!
To slay a dragon, and not be afraid
Should surely merit a victory parade.
'Twould be a fraud to be un-humble,

Yep, I'd say Owen has pretty much summed up what a knight's life was like in olden times. The chilvaric code was pretty demanding, so pwe may doubt that many knights could stick to it--especially after long fruitless, discouraging quests in search of non-existent dragons.
My guess is that some found ways of re-defining their errands, perhaps to just snare a bear or help a lil' ol' lady cross the road, so they might more quickly move on to rewarding themselves with yon maiden fair.

I got four J's but given the last two words of the Riddle-Solution I can't get the first.
High school was our 20th century Grail. Performance on the field or court was our ticket to romance a cheerleader. Failure on same was ignominy.
