The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

With the hubcap in his backpack, Jorge went on a trek.
If the Starmen were a hoax, what else was suspect?
Leaving Roswell at his back, Nevada was his goal.
He hitchhiked on his way. But why, he never told a soul.
Area fifty-one, a forbidding stretch of desert sand.
He went to the gate, and was shown to Base Command.
They took him to a foyer, and left him to abide
While they decided what to do with him, inside.
With the stigma of his brown skin, and Hispanic name,
It's hard to say what the brass thought of why he came.
Some said he had a shifty look, maybe was a spy,
Or he was just a kook, turn him around and let him fly.
(You'll have to cool your heels with Jorge until tomorrow.)
I can't say this jumble is easy and I can't say it's hard; it's sort of in between. I did have to reorder the 6-letter clues to see them, but the solution came once I had all 12 letters.
Actually this is really fun word play: a single phrase with both a literal meaning and also a totally different idiomatic meaning.
Looking forward to more of Jorge.
Posted before I saw the poem. I really like the way you incorporated everything about Jorge into the story.
Okay, my heels are on the cool setting till MaƱana. I hope Jorge isn't in any real trouble. He took a gamble walking right up to the MPs. Hope it's not his card to pay!

I started this earlier and I believe I stumbled in the FOYER.
Being Saturday I went over the xword and finally the CC. Now the newspaper is in the car, the answers are posted but I still had the further adventures of Jorge to entertain me
.
.thx Owen
