The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Perhaps the world record for the best homophonic pun with no redeeming humor.
”Now, Howdy, Voyager!”
His scull outran them!
He rowed & rowed till flat out,
prone—and quite undone.

"Friendship"
Patty was prone to be alone
except when talking on the phone.
She always said "Howdy" to her chum
and their conversations were lots of fun
until her phone broke, and she felt undone.
In response her pal got on the road
and brought Patty a new phone
which her pain outran
and her joy re-bestowed.
Misty ~ Your poem is fun.
It reminds me of my mother's love of the telephone. God forbid that her phone should ever have broken!
Nearly every morning when I was a kid, she would interrupt her housework for an hour or more for "my calls." She had two or three gal pals and she would speak to each one at great length every day. She would place a pack of Camels on an end table and light one up before dialing the first call of the day.
Sometimes a new friend would be added to the call list. Her "regulars" were Maxine, Dorothy, and Stella. I don't know how they could find fresh material day after day, but they certainly did: News, gossip, jokes--they could go on and on.
Later in life, as the old friends moved away or passed on, the responsibility for at least one daily call was taken over by my grown-up "baby sister." Mother and daughter kept the old tradition alive for added years.

Thank you for the very kind response, Ol' Man Keith. I love the story about your mother and her telephone friends, and it's remarkable that you still remember all three of their names. So great that your mother had so much phone support over all those years.
My own family was never much into telephones, but my son has set up a weekly Sunday Zoom visit with me and also my brother, and so it's nice to now have a virtual family visit at least once a week. Since my 93 year old Dad may be in his last week or month of life, it's especially comforting for all of us to be in touch at this time.
Misty, prayers for your father.
OMK, that little row, won your man some dough, eh?
And Patty got some unexpected dough and is back on line
[Nora and Charles want to learn more about this AA thing]
(Lois begins)
Have you heard that when dog bites man that it's not news
But if man bites dog that's the exception and worthy of note
For us in AA it's a difficult road and we learn to pay our dues
For we are prone to slips and easily undone, another footnote
In the coming and going , the ins and outs of recovery
"Howdya doit?", we were asked when we outran the fate
So many have suffered. We prayed that ours would prove contrary
We attended meetings every day coming early and staying late
