This simple verse will serve as my marker,
reminding folk that Iโ€™m on my break.
I wish you all well. Donโ€™t work too hard, or
your themes may be next to turn opaque.

Or havenโ€™t you noticed? As we tire,
clear thinkingโ€™s the first to go.
Even those whose work we admire
start to ramble andโ€”oh, the Woe!
โ€”we see a fine mind just โ€œphone it in.โ€
And itโ€™s truly a sin, to our groupโ€™s chagrin.

Sometimes we expect
too much. Have you checked?
Sure, the โ€œpen is mightier than the sword,โ€
but do we know when to pause that old keyboard?

"Success"

The flashy actress lived in a camper
with which no one was allowed to tamper.
She battened things down to the best extent
and ordered her crew to prepare for an event.

The next day on a podium she began to sing
which made reporters their newsrooms ring.
After that it was just a matter of time
till up the star ladder she managed to climb.

If winning the love of a literate ma'am
Is part of your ultimate life program,
Write something sweet,
Either long or brief,
Whether it's an ode or anagram!

Ol' Man Keith, I think I still remember a time when you warned us that you might not be checking in with us on Sundays any longer, is that right? Well, since then your Sunday verses have gotten longer and more intricate, with terrific rhyming (break/opaque; phone it in/chagrin; sword/keyboard)--and have become one of my Sunday pleasures.

Owen, your poem made me smile because it gave me such a lovely memory. I was the "literate ma'am," the English professor, while my husband Rowland was the bio-chemist. But he was amazingly literate, and when we started publishing our novels ('Murder at Astron Bay'and 'Death in Laguna Beach') I was the one who came up with the plot, while Rowland produced the elegant prose narration. Go figure.

I actually rode a horse for 20 minutes once. No calf roping nor bull riding and "Monry" was relatively tame
