Feb. 23, 2020 Sunday

|| rapid, chafe, fickle, impugn, fare game. || infamy, misuse, fought, callus, fondly, swanky, any way you slice it.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

I'll leave the J6 to Wilbur today. I think he'll be able to fit his story around them without too much difficulty. And while he's tackling the Third Age, I'll be a bit more contemporary.

My reflexes aren't as rapid as they were when I was young.
The only thing that's speedy now is sarcasm from my tongue!
My wits still chafe as sharp, when someone my fancies tickle,
By claiming politicians are deliberative, not fickle!

Not that I would libel nor impugn their dedication,
But most partisan politicos delve in fabrication!
In the game of governance, in state and federal halls,
The fare is who can toady best to gain donation hauls!

Love your J4 poem, Owen, dripping with cynicism...
Why not? 'Tis the season.

Here's my J4:
The carnival's sleazy side show advertised a burly-Q act starring a stripper with the exotic name of "Cleo-Patty." It was all a scam. The rubes paid $5 each only to find the bare dame with the rare name ne'er came!

And J6:
The beauty school offers scholarships based on certain factors. Applicants are asked what qualifies them for fee reductions. Some point to high IQs, others to financial need. But the school rewards those who openly advertise their good looks. Poverty scores no points, and many pay who prize wit.

The j4 wasn't tough today, though I kind of did a double take on the fourth clue and wondered how that would fit into a poem. Of course, Owen, you found an appropriate political spot for it! I'm hoping it becomes less true in future, though.

The fourth j6 clue stumped me for awhile, since I kept thinking it had to have the non-existent "o". But once all the letters were available, the cute solution popped right out anyway.

Sorry this is late. Slept in, then church then flea market.

Bilbo rejoins:

"So you are the infamous Smaug the callous
Who fought and slayed to possess this palace
Perhaps I misuse the term, it's not that swanky
And I know thoughts of thieves make you cranky."
Smaug responds
I'm not fond of dwarves any way you slice it
An infamous race though some deny it
But enough. Let's see what's in your pocket
Is it it a golden ring or a fancy locket?

ps. Not a difficult six J's. Riddle-solution also came quickly.

Clever poem, Wilbur. When I read it, one thought was, "Aha! Wilbur wanted that missing "o" as well! "

I Googled to verify the difference.

Yes, Sandy, I'd not seen your post. Yep, I borrowed that O. Bilbo's not the only burglar in town .

Owen and OMK delighted as usual. After posting came late lunch and needed nap. The CC was a long slog, I'd finished 98% and finally inked testy and GENE MAP to hopefully FIR.

I'm late to the (second) Jumble today--crossword puzzle took up much of the morning and so didn't get to it until later in the day. Had trouble with the fourth word (it turns out I got it, but couldn't believe that's how it was spelled) and with the first, and just couldn't figure out the solution. Wilbur, your poem had them all, I now see, as well as the solution, which I had to look up. Would love to have seen the cartoon in color--all those pizzas would have been fun and tasty-looking!

Happy birthday, again, Ol'Man Keith, and have a good week coming up, everybody.

Thanks, Misty, for the double birthday nod!

Wilbur, I was never into Smaug, Bilbo, and company, but I get a kick out of speaking your lines aloud. I think they are getting metrically more precise, don't you? Meter is funny, in that different speakers will naturally tap their own stresses & expect others to do the same.
