The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Not a very good Jumble today. At first I thought the word pessimist was being badly misused, but then thought, no, the answer would fit a pessimist, but in a very different way than the cartoon depicts it. The poor fellow in the cartoon fearing his suggestion isn't good enough might be a pessimist. The guy rejecting it is an arrogant ass-hole, but not a pessimist.

More cryptic clues:

Data entry /is/ not out-take.
Myrna was around a foot short /of/ being high.
Nautical man /to/ assail organized internists.
Age and /re-sorted/ to-do list.
Noise loses Southeast to tall // nay-sayer.

Totally agree about the jumble, Owen. It was easy to solve but their caption doesn't really make sense.

Sorry I'm late, had to travel two hours south from Ocala to attend a funeral Mass. Solved fairly quickly as noted.
I did have time on the drive to dream up this ditty:

****
Humble was this Hobbit, tales of splendor
Tempted him not. He had no great agenda
For wealth, lofty status and worldly fame.
His motto: what you put in goes next to your name.
He'd had enough of beastly braggadocio
A hasty exit? It was all he'd need know.
All depended on stealth and cunning
So he set sail and went a running
He needed a token, he grabbed a goblet
Put the ring on his finger and made his exit

(Next, you think you've seen anger, try a dragon in full fury when he discover Bilbo's burglary)

Well, I was on my way to a perfect morning, after getting the crossword without any errors, the Sudoku and the Kenken, but the fourth Jumble answer gave me problems, and although I figured out the first word of the solution, I was stuck. So I feel a bit silly, but still a good morning, all around. Have a great day, everybody.

Misty, #3 was right in the poem. And these two lines should have read:

A hasty exit? It was all he'd need know.
(IT) All depended on stealth and cunning

Rhymes with "SPLENDOR"

Sorry, guys, but I could see how, given some latitude in interpretation, today's solution fit the cartoon.
I am not saying the answer was brilliant, but it was of typical quality.

The kids were getting fed up. They kept losing balls that went over the fence into the old Coot's yard. When the first ones disappeared--three on the same day!--they expected the owner to have a heart and throw them back. But no. Since then, they reckon they've lost four more. This last was too much--especially when they could hear the old geezer clumping about, just inside his wall.
"Jeez," they yelled, "C'mon, Throw-a-ball, Mister! Have a heart!"

Oops. That was #4. Here's the line Misty:

All depended on stealth and cunning
So he set sail and went a running

Hope that helps

Cryptic solutions:

(antonyms) out-take = IN-PUT
(Myrna) LOY > FT = LOFTY
(as)SAIL OR(ganized)
AGE + AND* = AGENDA
NOIse - SE + TALL = NO-IT-ALL

* For cryptic solutions, asterisk indicates anagram. For these Jumble cryptics, full anagrams wouldn't be fair, but this is only a partial.

My apologies for not offering any code-breakers for my humble hints.
I reckon my fellow Jumbleayas have enough on the ball,
that by the time
they reach my rhyme,
they won't require
or desire
any more help at all.

Thank you, Wilbur, Owen, Ol'Man Keith--what wonderful and talented help you are. Yes, in the end I got it all, but the fun part was using your suggestions and clues to me get the solution. Thanks, everybody--I love this blog.

Have an early doctor's appointment tomorrow morning to help with another little problem on my face. I'm certainly not getting prettier as I'm getting older, but, hey, the important thing is health and a clear mind, isn't it. See you late tomorrow or Thursday. Have a good middle of the week, everybody.
