He had devised a way to make ceramic chess pieces that were both inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing. His company now had exclusive contracts with the major board game manufacturers to supply hundreds of thousands of his chess men.
With the approach of the holidays, their busiest season, they found they had fallen behind in their inventory of certain pieces. That's when he decided to fire up not one or two, but four pawn kilns!

As Bilbo escaped he espied a glimmer
Of light . Smaug's anger had begun to simmer.
Bilbo saw the passageway. For which he must get through
Else when Smaug spots the theft, he'll be Hobbit fondue.

A film of light flickered by the sun showed the exit
More color appeared, what an effect it
Had. He'd escaped, he was the Burglar
He'd bond with the dwarves, he was a star.

It takes a special brand of brilliance to devise such cryptic word play. Congrats to you, Owen: you've got it!
My favorites today are your first three. Each delightful in its way.

I agree, OMK. Owen has found a new metier. Let's, face it, #1 was a pretty difficult placement in a Hobbit story.

Re. "Der Alte". Good catch on Dag vs Konrad. That's junior year HS history. I remember a phrase: "Agonizing Reappraisal" which I believe had to do with the strategy of universal Communism. Dulles.

Owen, I've got Bilbo out of the dragon's lair. Should I give it a rest?

Or do you want to stay with those Uber clever cryptograms. OMK is a master of the spoonerism.

Wilbur -- I have very mixed feelings about this.

Con -- 👎 I'm really enjoying your poems immensely, and don't want to see them stop, but two poems every day would be overkill.
👎 I'm not really over my depression, and don't know how good I could do, either in quality or reliability.
👎 The crypic clues are a lot easier, and do seem to be appreciated by our tiny panel of judges.
Pro -- 👍 I sorta miss writing the longer poems here.
👍 They may be therapy for my depression, sometimes.
👍 I still harbor a forlorn hope of my poems someday being published, so too long a hiatus wouldn't be desirable.

What it boils down to how long you want to keep going. I hope a bit longer, but if you want to go back to enjoying the puzzles without responsibility, or maybe just doing the J6 once a week, just let me know.
