W781 - Anne Hathaway’s Hands
Shakespeare’s dad was a wealthy glover

FLN, Misty, they absolutely do!
Whether accused by others of acting the BULLY,
or claiming it as a macho virtue, as did Teddy Roosevelt, who pronounced everything he liked as “BULLY, just BULLY,”
the word enjoyed a major period as being quite a positive endorsement!
Look it up as an adjective.

The fete was catered with watermelon and peaches.
"The colors clash", said Biddy before the speeches.
But no one else was bothered by the decor,
And more guests were arriving at the door.

They had been invited to a poetry evening;
An expressive reading by a poet with feeling.
After the program, the refreshments were up.
A knife sliced thru the watermelon, "Shlupt!"

But Biddy wouldn't give up her objection.
She watched as the melon was divided in sections.
Then she threw herself spread-eagle on the pile
Of the other fruit, that she declared was out of style!

Everyone was amazed at whatever her mind did reach.
They left her there alone, to Rest In Peach!

It starts with a glance and a smile
Then things progress for awhile.
Everything is in clover
Until a fight, it's all over?
The true ones survive this trial!

Have you no sense of decency?
No scruples that the world can see?
Is your pity
So itty bitty
A druggist's scruple could scoop it free?

"Kind Couple"

The couple was low on cash,
and so their wishes did often clash.
But they never fought with a knife,
for Will cherished his sweet and kind wife,
and before they engaged in a fight
a discussion she would always invite.

One night Will got down on one knee
and read her some poetry.
She was so charmed and impressed
she invited him to bed for a rest.
From then on all their conflicts ceased,
and they spent their golden years in peace.

Ol' Man Keith, you gave us a bit of cruel poetry this morning. And in your later discussion I worried a bit about how Shakespeare's dad might treat his future daughter-in-law. Hope it all worked out okay.

And thank you, so much, for having me look up what a pleasure it might be to get a "bully" meal for supper. Hope that's what I'm getting tonight.

Owen, I hope no one ever invites Biddy to a poetry reading again, or attends one at her home. I suspect she traumatized everyone with her reaction to the fruit. (Frankly, I think she needs a therapist).

I miss CanadianEh! and Wilbur. Hope they'll check in with us a little later.

Glad today’s hint worked for you, Misty, and that you found your way to BULLY!
Yes, I do hope your meal proves BULLY, if that is what you wish.
As for Shakespeare’s dad, we do know he was a glover, and rich enough to afford a sizable home, the one that is visited by thousands annually as Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Stratford.
My first year of graduate study was in Stratford, and I used to cut through his backyard to get to my rooms from my classes.
We don’t know much about the father’s relationship to his son’s LOVER & bride. Ms. Hathaway was a good deal older than Will, suggesting a marriage of necessity. Shakespeare’s family had some social standing, as his dad became alderman and mayor.
Shakespeare made his fortune as a co-owner of the Globe Theater and retired back to Stratford at age 50, to a large new home that he had built. He was only 52 when he died.

I’m really late to the party. Thanks for missing me.
I had a change of plans/dates to celebrate a friend’s birthday and was out of town.
I’ll join you again tomorrow.
