The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

The COVID crisis keeps legitimate sports activities from operating. Only unauthorized--& therefore unsupervised--contests are happening.
This has naturally led to many injuries, some quite serious--requiring EMTs to splint legs and arms, bandage joints, and even administer several doses of NARCAN to reverse OD'ing in players trying for an extra boost to their game.

Yes it's May day here while at the Lonely Mountain Durin's day nears.
Bilbo, Balin, Fili and Kili had reached a vantage point
From whence they observed that the mountain formed a joint
Where a ridge spurred out to the south southwest.
The reek of noxious steam convinced them it was best
To look for the hidden gate. Certainly it was a given
That the only access would be there. Though not proven.
After much vain exploring Bilbo and Kili found it.
The rest of the party were hauled up to join the hobbit.
Attempts to batten down the gate went for naught
While Bilbo sat apart quietly and paused in thought.

As you can see , poetry-wise we need Owen desperately.
Erato, Erato, wherefore art thou
If you solve at the CC, SNAILS will make an appearance in the next Bilbo installment.

It's not an answer just referred to
Well, I got all four Jumble words without any problem at all. But the solution stumped me. I knew it had to do with the view from a height or an altitude, but what? Needed blog help, and there they all were, in Wilbur's delightful Bilbo story. And the solution? Yep, there it was too, right at the start, and Ol'Man Keith's sports story confirmed it. Thank you, everybody? Is that eagle going to fly away when the ball hits the rim?
Hope Sandy checks in. Look forward to seeing Owen on Facebook.
Have a good day, everybody.
The clues were not too difficult, though I did have to write out the 6-letter ones in my own way. The solution took a little while because whenever I see i,n,g, I get hung up on an "ing" word ending. Often that's a help, but not today. I did think the solution was clever.
Liked your poem, Wilbur; I'm getting fonder of Bilbo all the time. And you are very ingenious in using the jumble words. I do question, though, whether perhaps you meant "batter"? Of course, then you'd have to look for a different way to use the other word.
Nonsense, W.C.. Your rhyming skills needn't take a back seat to Owen's.
I thought you would take the lead in this, my friend.
But allow me to take the reins in your honor:

If "par" = 3, then that Eagle will surely fly on the first dunk.

I was thinking "BATTEN" down the hatches. Let's LIU: Yes, as usual you are right Sandy . But, when "batten"ing I suppose there's some banging going on as the dwarves did trying to open the accursed gate. Magic gate aa we shall soon see.

Ah, I get it, OMK. One furry footed creature to another. When these new months occur I get a little off-put. To coin a new word.
Time is flying by, the pent-up natives are getting restless. Not enough people this side of NYC are dying. "Open up!", "Let us get back to our bars, restaurants, churches and clubs". If people start dying in noticable numbers we'll get back in our (hobbit)holes.
Misty, "At your service " as Bilbo is wont to say.

Thx Sandy and Misty. I had a note ready to post but didn't have it in Docs and lost it.
Tune in tomorrow.
