|| || sorry, snort, helmet, birdie, in short order.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Dain of the Iron Hills with the blue iron helmut
Stood firm with his hauberked host and met
The first goblin charge. The elves with shining
Armor along with the men of the lake were lining
The southern spur. Bilbo gave a snort of disgust
That all his journey and defeat of Smaug must
Have a sorry end at the hands of the Goblin host.
Then beyond hope Bilbo saw in the sky the most
Birds he ever imagined. It was the eagles led
By Thorondor. In short order the goblins fled
But Bilbo saw no more as a boulder fell
On his head, just as he emitted a joyous yell.

Wow, a lot happened in your poem today, Wilbur. Can hardly wait to find out how Bilbo fares after that boulder.

This jumble was atypical for me. I got the solution after solving three of the clues and getting their letters; it jumped right out at me. Kinda cute. But that fourth clue eluded me and I finally looked it up. D'oh! Maybe if I followed pro golf instead of pro tennis?

Yep, well I couldn't have Bilbo refer to eagles as _____. Nor have him playing golf although legend has it that Bandrobas Took foiled an Orc invasion by slicing of the head of the Orc Chieftain with his mace, thus saving the Shire and inventing Golf at the same time.

Well, I had an interesting experience with the Jumble today, because like Sandyanon, I got the solution instantly after solving the first three items, but had trouble with the fourth. I did get bird_, but never heard of that as an actual word so figured it was wrong. Hoped I'd get the answer from Wilbur or Owen's poem, but although the three other words and the solution were there, still no fitting avian answer except for 'bird.' If it's a golf term, that explains my problem.

The cartoon made me laugh. I don't consider myself really SHORT, but it turns out I'm the same size as the little guy leading the parade.

Wilbur, the last line of your poem was a real shock! How on earth is poor Bilbo going to survive a boulder hitting him on the head. Aaarrghh. I'll be afraid to tackle your poem tomorrow, dreading bad news.

But, till then, let's all have a good day!

(Hope Owen and Ol'Man Keith are okay. Am a bit worried about them.)

Misty, Bilbo fortunately had a helmet on his head(spelled correctly I see). Unlike the movie where it's de rigueur to see the hero's blue eyes, combatants all had protective headgear.

The peons may only have had leather on their head. Bilbo's problem which I also (space and rhyming considerations) neglected to say, was he'd slipped on the ring.

Hopefully, when the dust settles, someone will trip over him.

And... There's more to the battle, it'll take more than a bunch of birdies to lick Borg.

Thank goodness Bilbo had a helmet on--thanks for the reassurance, Wilbur.

I'm OK, gang. I just fell asleep early last night and slept right through my usual posting time. I guess my experience yesterday took more out of me than I realized. I expect to be back on schedule tonight.
This report oughta allay any fears for my health. I hope all's well with Owen.
