To Clay the Source
My uncle crossed the Congo. It was like a sauna,
but then the trendy thing to do.
He was one of those pith-helmeted bwanas,
exploring the locale among a queue
of white engineers, adventurers all.
They aimed to change the river's course
by damming with silt its grand waterfall.
Thy succeeded only in claying the source
and slowing river traffic down to a crawl.

Uncle Andrew was an oddity.
("Eccentric" to be more trendy.)
When kids would try to cross his lawn,
He'd get cross, and sic the law on 'em!
He liked the locale where he had his home.
(Even the kids, when he got to know 'em.)
He'd host fancy dinners for nephews and nieces
Where the entree might be Reeses Pieces!
But then the dessert would be chicken flambe
(The nieces are still traumatized to this day!)
If he couldn't ignite it, he'd stay the course
Until he could find his flame-thrower, of course!

I decided to look up 'uncle'
and found it's Samantha's hunkle.
So many meanings to 'cross'
that I didn't bother to gloss.
But had lots of trouble with 'trendy'
and needed the help of friend Wendy.
She's a kind and generous gal
who lives near me in my locale.
So thanks to this kindly source
I was able to stay the course.
(I didn't make up Samantha's hunkle)
My Goodness
I had to look it up, and I see
"Hunkle" is a real word that Misty
uses most confidently.
The Urban Dictionary
defines it somewhat luridly.
I am surprised at it and a wee
bit tickled that she
should spring it on we three.
