Had to get the needed letters from the clues to figure out the solution. But then, when I did, it was was kind of a letdown. Am I weird that the solution just seems like a normal phrase that would end the cartoon caption in a logical way? Doesn't seem like much of a play on words or humorous, or anything.
I'm sure there will be interesting comments.
I'm with you, Sandy. It's a pretty straightforward phrase, nothing funny about it. Nice cartoon though. Not another horse in sight.
My verse today deals with another kind of runaway contest.
It is mercifully short.
His victory came in lucky round five.
Despite violet trunks, that boxer could thrive.

I do see that the phrase could mean two slightly different things -- either that the good start resulted in victory, or that the horse was in front all the way. But not really different in the sense of a pun, don't you think? I love it when the writers come up with something laughworthy or even groanworthy. Disappointed when they don't.
We shouldn't have to strain to find the gag.
I wasted time (as I imagine we all did) trying to make something amusing out of it. I was even working to see how a light emitting diode could affect a horse race.
I did like the clue words, how they led to an awfully EZ-- er... poem.

"Lucky Race"
Bucky was very lucky
to win a race because he was plucky.
He wheeled a-round
the racing mound,
and won a bet--
and met Violet.
She made him feel alive
and he began to thrive,
and so was never sorry
for that race victory.
And all of this led
to Bucky and Violet getting wed.
Brava, Misty!
Another happy ending.
How about that? I actually joined you today with an upbeat conclusion for our protagonists.
Must've been that word "thrive."
I'm not so sure my guy deserved the win.
Given the limited rhyme possibilities, I suspect his opponent took a dive.
But I wish "lucky Bucky" and his bride Violet a long and joyous union!
