Had a little trouble with clue three, but not too much. Figured that the first word of the solution was a gerund, and then saw what the second word could be, and the remaining letters quite naturally arranged themselves.

Don't want to repeat myself, so just look back to my Monday remarks. Same-o, same-o.

"Her Job's Secure"
-or-
"Why Mama Does the Shopping"
Daddy was a bogus Christmas Eve shopper.
Just look at the food he brought home to the hopper.
A pound of rancid jungle-rotted meat
ain't worth much as a holiday treat.

This was the one I messed up on. I had CANDID which just didn't ring* a bell.

The verb in the solution actually is a pun. ____ the premises is exactly what a Night watchman would do. In this day and age hopefully armed. It's become a jungle out there.

I need an R not a D

"A Tough Life"

Rusty was happy he found
a sweet little dog in a pound.
He liked to wear togas
which made him look bogus.
Strange food he fancied
even when it was rancid.
His home was a jungle
and each clean-up was a bungle.
Cost him much to get insuring
and had little help for securing.
All this trouble made him sob
until he finally got a job.
Now he's finally calm and mellow
and has become a happy fellow.

For Wilbur ~
Here, have an "R."
- R -
Take two more; they're small:
- r and r -

Misty ~
I am picturing Rusty in a toga.
Or is it the little dog? That's a sweeter picture.
He should take care ingesting rancid food. When food spoils in that manner, it releases dangerous carcinogens.
Doesn't he have a Mama who can do his shopping?
Nice to read where a job can bring a happy ending.

I'm afraid Rusty's life is pretty much controlled by the daily Jumble words and solution. I do my best to give him a happy ending but he has to endure embarrassing things, like having to wear a toga along the way, Ol Man Keith.

I agree, Wilbur ~ insofar as the key word has multiple meanings.
But as low as the bar seems to be, I would say this lacks a necessary quantum of humor to amuse. I believe that's why Sandy referred us to her "Monday remarks."
I say "Meh."

When I first skimmed your opus, Misty, I mistook it to say "Tutu" instead of "Toga."
No matter how often I check, I can't shake that image. And the "He" can easily be the dog.
