I think the cartoon and caption are actually funnier than the solution.

Had a little trouble with clue one, of all things. D'oh!!

Game six tonight. I guess Wilbur would have to stay up late to watch it, while we Californians get to watch early. If we're not either incinerated or suffocated. Not actually a funny remark -- sorry, I tend toward gallows humor.

"Tough Birthday"

Dad wanted to please daughter Sue,
so a birthday party he threw.
She had asked for an eagle.
but he gave her a beagle.
She started to wail,
which made him inhale
and drink a glass of wine
the next step to divine.
He had held an event
that so poorly went--
until she was kissed by the beagle,
which made her feel regal.

Agreed, Sandy ~ this is not one of the snappier solutions.
Fingers crossed for the Dodgers tonight. When I read the cockiness of the LA Times sports writers, I only sense the jinx is in.

Misty ~ I'm pretty sure a beagle was a better idea for a pet all along. Imagine trying to get a license and a collar tag for an eagle in Irvine!

"Events at Delphi"
-or-
"Pithy Pythia"
In ancient times oracles inhaled fumes,
--divine gasses rising from the earth--
then spoke a prophecy. Whether joy or gloom,
it was rarely clear till it'd given birth
to the living events foretold.
"An eagle," they'd say, "rising high & bold
speaks of your happiness" -or maybe, deduced,
just says, "Your hens are escaping from their roost!"

If the sooth, said, failed to please
they sometimes threw incense into the gas
and offered revisions on their knees
until a better outcome came to pass.

It all depended on the power of the seeker.
Better to be mighty--than one of the meeker.

Your eagle comment cracked me up, Ol' Man Keith. And your poem, with all the Jumble words scattered throughout, was a delight.

Is that a coed arm wrestling competition? It's often referred to as wrist wrestling. Some girls have made drinking money off unsuspecting barflies.
Getting that first word of the riddle-solution was key.

Poem to follow later

Go Rays

Absolutely right, WC!
One of my former students, a female, an award-winning director, is a champion dive bar arm wrestler.
Watch out for her!

Didn't think I would be very interested in this World Series, but it has kind of grabbed me. Still very suspenseful in the seventh. My fingers are crossed too.

Wilbur, are you watching? The Rays have six more outs.

Sandy, make that three more left. Cash made a moronic mistake taking Snell out of the game. They are absolutely hung up on analytics and if they use their brains and are wrong they'll be fired.

So, they'd rather lose a WS the stats way.

Any fool could plainly see that Snell was dominating and not tired.

I gave little hope.

WC

Oops. Now 3-1

Sorry, Wilbur, but give the Dodgers a title every thirty-two years anyway. The Rays aren't going to disappear, for sure.

Well, I've just had a tragedy. Clauder and I were finishing supper, and I always leave the back door open so that my 17 year old dachshund Dusty can go out to pee. Suddenly we heard a yelp and another and we ran out to the back patio and heard our neighbor down the hill calling that she feared an animal had been taken off by a coyote. We looked everywhere for Dusty, around and outside the patio, and he is nowhere to be found. Five years ago we lost his twin sister Misty (I took her name) the same way, but then it seemed the coyotes were gone and we got more relaxed about letting Dusty out alone. I have a feeling that the fires approaching closer to Laguna may be affecting the wildlife and maybe having them head south and again closer to our homes. Only I didn't stop to think about that since the fires are still so recent. My sweet Rowland and I got Dusty and Misty 17 years ago from a breeder near San Diego, and he was the sweetest animal I ever had. I can't believe he's gone. My whole life revolved around him during this house-bound year. Sorry to bother you about this, but I've talked to my son, but still need to get my feelings out more. I know you'll send me sympathy and I thank you in advance for that.
