The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Well the j4 was pretty straightforward. I thought the solution was a clever idea that for me didn't quite come off.
That comment got prematurely finished. I like family Thanksgivings, and regret not being able to participate in any this year. The cartoon family seems bored listening to the same old ideas, but I'd love it.
Now the j6 wasn't really tough either, though clue three gave me a moment's pause. I thought the solution was pretty clever, and spot on in terms of the real world. Doesn't look very safe to have an open vault right there, though, does it? Maybe that bank is not such a good choice!
FLN, Sandy ~
Speaking of the World Series (you were, weren't you?), that was quite some finish last night, wasn't it?
As much as I support any franchise, I've sort of adopted the Dodgers as my 2nd home team. But you couldn't help but be excited for the Rays last night!

Yes, OMK, I thought it was a great game (what I saw of it by checking in periodically) and great for the Rays, but I think the Dodgers will ultimately come out on top.
I'm kind of wondering what the players will do on their next "travel day". Have a party?
Well, I tried to come up with a poem this morning, but it just didn't work.
My son, who lives in San Francisco, fell and broke his hip on Friday afternoon and had to have surgery yesterday. So I'm probably just too distracted to come up with anything. I'll try again tomorrow.
Misty ~ We were concerned when we didn't see you here yesterday. Please don't worry about posting a new poem under the circumstances.
I'm terribly sorry to read of your son's accident & surgery. I send him and you my best wishes for his full recovery.

"More Guff"
-or-
"The Same Old Stuff"
The turkey's smoky flavor
that you so happily savor
comes from the flour dip we gave her,
commingled with the ashes
left over from the fracas
from the family fiery fight
last Thanksgiving night.
The political signs denote
another brawl for every vote.
So don't keep yourself in check;
we need new ashes--what the heck!--
Let's burn the old joint down
and happily scarf more turkey down.

"D is for Defense"
It was a brazen attempt to occupy our land,
to take from Count Crontuila all the acres of DelVine,
but their infantry lacked the virtues of our own tricky band,
when our yeomen trudged our cannon to a strong defensive line.
In military jargon we call it "artillery archery"
when our marshals place our heavy guns to outflank the enemy's treachery.

Thank you, Ol Man Keith, and I really enjoyed your second poem with all the LA Times Jumble words.
Misty*, good to see you today. As I portended, Saturday was a rough xword unless certain PP's were known. Sometimes there's a Sports term that's easy for me just like the pop-cul was known to some.
I'll try to continue my tale of "Ivanhoe" sometime later. Sandy and I have a Rays-Dodgers game tonight to watch.
Two good pitchers. Dodgers choked last night.

* I'm sorry to hear about your son. Best wishes and prayers
Wilbur ~ So how 'bout dem Rays?! Huh?
I'll never forget that home plate slide by Arozarena!
WooHoo!
And da Bums?
Are they gonna blow it again?
Should we send 'em back to Brooklyn?
I mean, Sheee-ish...
~ OMK
Dodgers. Three games to two.
