The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

I guess when you look at a map, south is "lower".
I wonder if ice-skates were invented,
To prevent stomping on toes when not intended.
There is a certain grace to the sliding,
For those who progress from hitting the siding!
The kids play hockey weekly at a rink.
Some wear khaki uniforms, others in pink!
To skate while everyone is hitting with sticks,
Takes some fortitude, and some deke-y tricks!
One goalie who spoke in a low bass key
Said it was because he really was Loki!
The opposite team were all Frost Giants.
Hockey was a safer way to show defiance!
Those kids are very tiny in the background. Can anyone tell me what they are doing? What's written on that contraption?
This trickster Norse character has many traits.
Today’s J-words focus me on his shape-shifting ability.
I note two modern roles, in the haiku…
“Loki, Low Key Goal-ley”
He stomps, and guards, and
wins. Unmasked, weekly, he guards
in Guards’ starched khakis.

Owen, I don't know what that thing is, but "SOUTHERNMOST" is written on it,and they're having their picture taken with it, so I suppose it's something representing where they are visiting, which is not only south, but also West. A very touristy thing to do, yes?
"Modest Man"
Kenny never looked tacky,
even when he wore khaki.
Nor did he consider it lowly
to weekly work as a goalie.
He disliked any kind of pomp
and out of fancy parties did stomp.
Yes, he was very low key,
but that made him happy and free.
Its shape suggests a ballistic object or a diving bell. Except for the lack of a window, it could be a recovered space capsule.
Beats me.
Owen ~ You spotted the low key/Loki connection too in your anthropological survey of skate-wearers.
I would love to see a hockey team in pink!
Misty ~ Your Kenny seems a purist, maybe even a puritan. His personal modesty may be an attractive trait, but don’t you think him a bit judgmental—to be called low key?

Could that little triangle be a window?
And what is the guy on the left (stage right) holding in his fist?
Is it just a "thumbs-up" gesture? Or is it the flame on a lighter?

Keith, I looked up "low Key" and the phrase suggests behavior that is calm, quiet, restrained, moderate. So, yes, may be shouldn't have stomped out of a fancy party. But I didn't mean to suggest he was a purist, just a modest, not very exciting guy.
I'm taking a shortcut since one of the words reminded me of this...

"I've been itching to get to know you better, Chet ",
[Lois recounted]
When she finally got to sit down with him. "Is it time yet?"
They'd found a quiet Cafe with the imposing moniker: "The Habonero Hut"
[Lois continues]
"In order to combat the tyrant alcohol, I got an antique for a sponsor, but
Despite her misgivings about relationships for which she had a healthy fear
She gave me permission to ask you to come tonight, since you'd completed a year "
Now how the two managed to separate from the group is a story in itself
The movie was horse manure, another tale of the perils of ill-begotten wealth.
The first words Lois said were "I see you've ditched those khakis you wore that first night.
I'm so happy to see you've prospered in the program and stayed on the bright*"
** An e term that's been replaced by "Clean"(and sober)

Or this one...
Chet and Lois are billing and cooing]
That first night I liked what I saw; I spotted you at first glance
Though you were hardly well groomed; oh those khaki pants
You could have passed for an emcee if I'd had my jollies
Another thing I liked, you had no eye for the dollies
We're so different. For me it's John Lennon when I think of the walrus
And for you it's some golfer, Stadler, who could be driving a bus
But Lois, my dear, though my persona is hardly fizzle and pop
When it came to chasing you down I came running on the gallop
WC
Threes a crowd
Chet had changed over the year, no khaki now he sported suede
He'd emerged from that cold, dark place. A new start he had made.
Instead of hamburger he now had steak: his thirst was slaked with Coke,
His old friend Johnny Walker was a distant bloke.
John, his Sponsor, suggested helping a newcomer find the way.
And there he was, Eddie, shaky, bewildered and lost
No mistake about it, He'd bring him around no matter the cost.
"My friend", said Chet, I want you to ask Him for help and call me every day".
WC
Gotcha, Misty.
But by purist, I didn't mean the most extreme of the brand.
His desire for simplicity is enough to earn that aspirational title. And as I suggested, it can be an attractive trait.
I enjoyed writing about my Loki. I was inspired by the near Spoonerism of "Low Key" and the reversed sounds of "Goal-Ley."
