Owen, seems as though you must be feeling at least a little better. Very glad, if so.

FLN ~ I did not see Misty after she posted her morning verse yesterday, which is most unusual for her. She nearly always returns to post a review.
I hope she is OK, and that she may have had a busy day with friends or teaching. Let’s see if she is back on a regular schedule today!

Some ‘Jum’s

Although it’s my motto to tough it out,
I may upend expectations by taking a break.
Whether Cymbal or Symbol, I seriously doubt
these words can mesh in a way that’s not fake.

From Fossil to Docile—and Wassail!
they all just belie me;
they Jostle, I’m no Apostle:
they glare & defy me.

"Grotto Motto"

While looking for a fossil in a grotto,
Mary found a wall-inscribed motto.
It was preceded by a symbol
she had once seen in a hymnal,
and it said "If on your faith you depend,
nothing will your life upend."
She shared this motto with some of her chums
who rewarded her with some antacid Tums.

My apology for not checking in again yesterday, Ol' Man Keith. I thought I had lost the slide show for my upcoming Senior Center class, and desperately looked for it and to my great relief finally found it. So that's how I spent my day, and I guess I never made it back to the blog. Am sure I missed lots of wonderful offerings.

But what a pleasure to see your cool verse this morning. I checked, and sure enough, there they were, all of today's Jumble words with the solution in your title. A lovely fun gift--many thanks.

From last Sumner. I took several days of J's and combined them in a long Chet&Lois.

One of todays words triggered it

fling, proxy, detach, fiddle, paid off.

I thank you for the invite. I'll try not to be blown off course.
For mine is a tale of hopelessness , despair and utmost remorse.
I had my fling of the fast life, quite the perky spitfire
But alcohol became the master and I had only one desire

Sure I enrolled in college , I explored the various forums
Of learning with those fossils spouting verbiage - when they had a quorum
I fiddled and diddled skipping class and using a proxy
While I was off in some beer hall chasing some doxy

Come Spring I'd peddle popcorn at the baseball park
Watching the Oriole mascot; it was an entertaining lark
I'd completely detached from serious , studious endeavors
Abruptly I was summoned by the Dean. "We're not doing you any favors

Pampering you." His words cut me to the core.
"Shape up or ship out. For you there will be no encore!"
Did I follow his advice? If I had it might have paid off in the end
But I paid no heed , I was on another path. for alcohol was my friend
******
---------
[Chet continues]
Although the Dean gave me little wiggle room
I knew that I still had , perhaps, a final chance
Could I turn things around and avoid impending doom?
That my life was a mess could be seen at a single glance.

Poor me, pour me another I wailed as I trolled the singles bar
File me stupid, file me dense, I now was on file with the Registar
I left his office with the best of intentions make no mistake
Sure enough, next day same old hangover , same old shakes.

Misty, have fun chasing down all those J's and riddle-solutions. Must be nearly 20.

I see I used another J back in May

Try as he might, pray as he might, Chet's feelings would not abate
An otherwise normal guy he saw Lois as a perfect mate
She too has an anniversary soon, perhaps he could offer
A symbol, ideally one that wouldn't drain his limited coffers
Something memorable, something cheap costing little money
He found it at a gift shop. A charm with the perfect word:
Harmony

Wow, here's another one

[Lois continues her tale about finally coming to AA]

As I entered the halls I was met by smiling faces and a warm hello
A lovely lady beckoned me over , "Come sweetheart, tell me your tale of woe"
She sat me down on a soft, pillowed seat: "We'll show you a better way"
Any way was better than mine, a life of hopelessness and decay.

"With the help of a Higher Power and prayer you can upend your life
Just buckle down, follow the suggestions and end that bitter strife"

Wow, a grand slam(This one from Feb, 21

Chet was informed that he'd be the Group's Bookie
That meant procuring Speakers , an honor for a rookie
It was no great exertion as he'd get to visit other
Towns and certainly having Lois along was no great bother

Chet would spruce up nattily and Lois would enhance
Those lovely eyelids without overdoing it perchance.
Unity is a guiding motto in AA and nothing unifies
Like a caravan cross state to visit other gals and guys.
Time after time all would agree that you couldn't overdo the fun
For the camaraderie and closeness they felt was second to none

Dear Misty,
Sorry you had such a scare yesterday, but happy for you in finding your missing slides. I don't regret raising a mild alarm today, as we all benefit in looking out for each other.
We know that when we break from known habits, something might have gone wrong.

Anyway, I enjoyed your poem today. It seemed all of a piece, keeping a nice unity. And I loved the ending, rhyming "Tums" with "chums." Her pals seem to equate fervor with digestive problems.

Oh, my, Wilbur!
Does Guinness offer an "Epic" prize? You'd be a shoe-in.

I wish I had more time to do justice to your offering, but I have given myself a deadline to finish a chapter today, so can do little more than read you once through and appreciate the basic rhymes (loved "proxy" and doxy").
I found myself captivated by your beat, literally turned "bobble-head" in bouncing to your persistent end-stopped couplets. "(You) got rhythm. Who can ask for anything more?!"
And Bravo to you for delving deep into AA psyches!

Wilbur, I am beginning to feel that I know Chet and Lois as friends. Don't know how based in reality they are, but they are surely admirable as well as likable people.

Thanks.

Sandy, I was, indeed, a Bookie. Problem, this was around Boston and I was that Boston driver- epic as OMK would say.

I thought my story was epic and people were coming to hear ME!. I got a nudge one day and my friend informed me that "John " was "John the Indian " a famous AA speaker and personality. And....
The nicest guy you'd ever meet; as humble as he was famous.

Wilbur, my goodness! What a mountain of poetry from Chet today. I could only find
"fossils" in your first verse, but then slowly went through the others, one by one, and found them all. What an amazing morning of poetry from you--thank you so much. A real treat!
