Triathlon Trials
They were rivals for the win,
But a viper lazily crossed the path of the race.
This unsavoury foe had no grace
And bit with a grin.
A scarf acted as a tourniquet
Until the arrival of the ambulance,
Preventing the need for a lance
And keeping the runner healthy.
To the victor go the spoils!
OMK- thanks for that succinct, pithy haiku. Cleo has a viper instead of an Asp today. Great work.
"Surprise Ending"
Wearing a colorful scarf
Wendy arrived at the wharf.
She had enjoyed her voyage lazily
but her future would proceed crazily.
Right after her arrival
she would have to confront her rival
who would be nervous and hyper
and could attack her like a viper.
But he surprised her with a treat that was savory,
and praised her for her bravery.
And so the rivals became good friends,
and this is how the story ends.
Paul Bunyan saw in Pecos Bill a rival
And Pecos Bill saw the same right back.
The whole town awaited their arrival
The arm wrestling tourney was their match!
Paul had the longer arm, fitting his size.
Bill was just as strong, used a book as prop.
Bill's whip was a viper snake, his prize.
Paul used ax as a toothpick for his chops.
The two men lazily put their arms together.
Savoring the chance to really show his strength
They were at it half-an-hour, neither man was tougher
The referee called a draw at such length!
Legends shook hands. Any anger? Not the least!
Then together they scarfed down a victory feast!
Wrote most of this last night, but fell asleep 4 lines shy of the ending. It's a poor effort that thrashes any meter, but at least it rhymes properly!
FYI, Bill did use a live rattlesnake as his whip. And I wrote about Paul Bunyan before, Oct. 11, 2018
Generally, a viper is any venomous snake, such as an asp or rattlesnake, as opposed to a constrictor.
An asp is a type of hooded cobra.
Well done, ye hintless!
This is for the rest…

You know I'm happy, as always, to see your Wordle success, Misty!
But I guess it didn't work out so well for you yesterday...? You didn't post a response to my Tuesday hint.

CEh! ~ Your poem gave me a welcome laugh. Thank you.
I got a kick out of the sarcastic use of "To the victor...."
Unless, that is, I am mis-reading it...?
Didn't the viper slither across the finish line first, after temporarily disabling his opponent?
It would be perfectly in character. From the days of Eden on, the serpent is both clever and unscrupulous.
Misty ~ Ah, another happy ending...
Wendy would have known she had no reason to be afraid of being attacked, if only someone had told her she is in a Misty poem!
Motto: Never fear the conclusion.
Owen ~ You take me back to my happiest time in grammar school. We used to gather in the auditorium on special days to listen to the big radio broadcasting American folk songs and tales.
Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill were heroes "on the air."
Thank you for adding data--about Bill's whip--and clarifying about "viper."
It's important to get the facts right, about our myths.

Wow! So many great poems from everybody today. I have a busy afternoon--going out to have some wine and snacks with neighbors--but if I have time later on, I'll try to come back and comment.
Meanwhile, have a good evening coming up, everybody.
OMK- I love your interpretation of my verse. I threw in the last line as an afterthought, to close it off, but felt it was a little disjointed. You made it work!
Owen- I enjoyed your verse too. (And the one over at the Corner!)
I'm doubling up again. Misty, can you spot the Thursday J's mixed with today?
"If your done scarfing down Aunt Nora's savory stew my sweetheart
I suggest we take in a meeting crosstown. It's getting late we must depart."
"Lois, darling, our arrival should be eight sharp, right on time.
The opening speaker was describing a complicated paradigm:
"The viper of insanity continues to gnaw at sobriety in many ways
One must be ever vigilant- in lockstep with the Program everyday.
"That's an interesting slant, eh Chet? He reminds me of you. Do you know how?"
Chet eyed Lois lazily with a hint of a smile. "I'll bet it's his khaki trou "
"You win the goblet, my love, you've no rival for my heart
But let's skip the final speaker. I say we wrap it up and depart."
The meeting was a hubbub of activity as the couple made their way.
"Nothing like an AA Meeting to cap off a perfect day"

First, Ol' Man Keith's Cleo's viper cracked me up and made me laugh. What a clever haiku!
Then that nasty viper bit a runner and messed up CanadianEh!'s interesting triathlon, sending the poor guy to the hospital in an ambulance.
Thank goodness, Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill had a happy solution to their wrestling match in Owen's cool poem.
And loved the neat conversation between Chet and Lois in Wilbur's delightful verse.
A day of simply marvelous poetry: thank you, thank you, everybody!
