Danial was retired, but still fit and full of vim.
Some wanderlust exploring he decided was for him!
He traveled to the Great White North in Kodiak,
Hiked and camped, and ran a river in a cold kayak.

He traveled thru the Everglades, with his old guitar.
Music is a boon companion, no matter where you are.
He met with politicians, who'd stick out a hand to shake.
He met a anchorite, who shied from him as from a snake.

He traversed a desert, where natural shade was scarce.
He tried his hand at writing, but only nonsense verse.
Thru it all he made deposits in the greatest treasuries.
In his secret stash he had -- a horde of memories!

Today's Jumble was a hard one for me. The fivers fell easily, and the riddle was easy, but I had to work backwards to get the sixers. I don't have a time, since I worked on it during commercials and the online sites I use don't have a pause button, but I'll bet it was a lot longer than normal! I was just moving tiles around, and when I hit the right combo, the app gave me a ta-da when I didn't realize I had a word! That silent U threw me off.

BTW, the poem is certainly not about me. I've never been near either Kodiak or the Everglades. The only lines that fits me are the in the last verse! And the desert I traversed was done in an air-conditioned car!

Appreciate your generosity, Owen, in sharing so much of yourself - in your poetry & otherwise. Thanks for letting us into your world!
I hope you're feeling better & recovering apace.

Hey, Owen, I read your poem first, which probably helped me with the clues, because even the fourth came with only a momentary pause. And you're right -- the solution was obvious.

I really like your poem. It flows so rhythmically (meter is evidently quite important to me) and the topics, although very far from anything I have ever done, are vividly interesting. You do have a way of creating verbal pictures. And that's even with the constraint of fitting in Jumble words!

I look forward to the jumble every morning. Thank you.

Woohoo! Woohoo! I got the Jumble this morning--after failing at crossword, sudoku, and kenken. Huge relief, and couldn't wait to come to this Jumble corner to let you know I'm not a total Saturday failure. Since I got the answer, I was able to enjoy your delightful poem as a poem, Owen, not just as a clue answer source. Many thanks for that too, on this Saturday morning. And take good care of yourself--you're in all our thoughts these days.

Congratulations, Misty, on your Jumble successes. May your streak continue...

Owen, I've never been to Kodiak either. But when we were in Alaska we flew in a small plane up to the Arctic Circle, crossing the Yukon on the way. We spent the day hiking on frozen tundra and visiting a tiny town named - quite appropriately! - Coldfoot.

I'm back! It has taken me a long while to return to the rhythm of my daily routine and this is the first Jumble since returning. I saw and filled the solve even before unscrambling the words! That part was fairly easy, too. When I see U and G in a scramble I immediately assume they will be together in the final and they are. It was music to my ears! As are your poems, Owen. You constantly impress and amaze me with how you so appropriately fit in the puzzle words with captivating verses. I, too, have been to Alaska though not to Kodiak.

I too couldn't get #4 even though the riddle popped pretty quickly . I actually had TRAGIC for #4 but when I retraced my steps I was missing a T .

But with 3 letters I finally hit upon the
same idea Lucina had .

And ... If my riddle is still unsolved think a dozen+1 and Clark GABLE. And you have a famous novel.

But I'm rereading my DEIGHTON* and Bernard Sampson asked (as if he was doing a crossword) " Six letters: 'married in opera but not in Seville'".

He later says the answer is obvious to the most casual of opera goers .

Even I was pretty sure of it . The answer was never given. OMK, you're not eligible

* He such a common xword clue that I capped him.

Btw. I can't get the SW on the xword . I am not familiar with Nick Hornby works .
I'm going to sleep on it
