The atom smasher was a marvel, knowledge it would bring!
Smashing atoms open, so we can see the inner springs!
To probe the world that's even smaller than most small,
Served a notice to the universe that we would know it all!

Each module of its construction cost government a mint,
Detractors said that all that money could be better spent.
Cranks warned a chain reaction would destroy our planet.
Protesters fueled by rumors demanded someone ban it!

Physicists were excited by this new tool at their disposal,
Began on planning papers, each submitting a proposal.
Researchers behind darkened visors watched its works,
Saw the genesis of quantums, in atoms smashed to quarks!

I really marvel at the variety of topics you come up with, Owen. This poem is wonderful in its reach. I can't tell if everything in it is accurate, but you surely make it sound that way.

The jumble was not so easy for me today, or maybe I just gave up too easily. The clues were no problem but I went to your poem right away for a hint to the solution. And found it; the "v" was the basis for my search. D'oh! Things are so obvious once you know them, aren't they.

Thanks. Hope you're feeling fit.

Haven't made it here the past couple of days. As to the discussion about the time of reveal, any time is fine with me. I almost always do it the night before, except the Sunday 6 is often not up until too late for me. So anytime earlier in the day you want to do it is fine with me. I just appreciate you establishing this and keeping it going, however you want to do it. Hope you're healing well.

Delightful poem, as always, Owen--many thanks. You confirmed my four answers as correct, but I still haven't come up with the solution. Maybe I just don't know my tennis well enough. Any hints will be appreciated.

Misty, look at the 1st stanza (last line) of OKL's poem !

Thanks, Anonymous--I finally got it. It had nothing to do with tennis, did it. Well, okay (served), OK.

I couldn't get no 4 . Nor the riddle. Got it quickly from the poem .

Misty, I thought perhaps your birthday was this month too. So, I looked you up. And...
Now I'm all excited about James Joyce . I think I will buy "Simply Joyce" .

And of course your b-day isn't until the end of the year. There's a camaraderie ( maybe just in my mind) of people born in 1944 .

If you look closely at the background of the cartoon, you'll usually find a better clue than anything in the foreground. Today, for example, the player in the background is fairly obviously serving the ball, not returning a volley.
