There are several other Jumble blogs, but the ones I checked all started off by listing the answers. In this blog, answers can be either hinted at or masked by burying them in comments. No overt spoilers!

|| || vocal, rummy, avenue, fright, gave him an earful.
The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are the lifeblood of a blog!
Read the comments, and reply to them if you are so moved!
Donna was surprised, the whole town was, in fact. They were a sanctuary, not subject to attack! But pirates took the avenue, gave everyone a fright! Slashed their swords around as if looking for a fight!
The captain marched up to the tavern Donna kept, Found her huddled, and into his arms she was swept! She was all the booty that he brought his crew there for. With Donna o'er his shoulder they retreated to the shore!
Took her to his cabin, the sailors had a rummy night. Hers was vocal indignation, which went on till first light! She gave him holy hell, in morn he turned the ship, Returned her to the town, he'd had an earful of her lip!
Interesting poem to go along with today's Jumble, Owen. I thought this Jumble was going to be a real toughie with the long answer, but found it surprisingly easy. All five answers filled in without any problem, and the funny cartoon just made the solution spring right up. Great Saturday Jumble, topped by a fun poem.
Hooray for Donna! Cute poem, Owen -- I couldn't think how you'd work in one of those solution words especially but you surely did. Built the whole poem around it, perhaps.
The jumble wasn't difficult. Easy clues and a solution which flowed quite logically from the cartoon, I thought. Funny, but not really punny.
I'm not sure which one(s) inspired the poem. Could even be the JAMAICA RUM in the crossword. Despite that, one word gave me a rum time until I found the (dated, informal) definition as "peculiar".
Oh. I just thought you meant they were drunk. So it wasn't necessarily that solution word. In any case, you integrated all those words very creatively. Kudos!
Actually, however, my understanding of its usage (as slang) was more like "not quite legitimate, shady". Of course I'd never looked it up, so that might not be a general meaning, just how I interpreted it. Interesting, though.
Luckily this was easy enough to work out during commercial breaks. The words easily emerged and the solve just as Misty said, sprang out. Love the poem, Owen!
I knocked off the J quickly before turning to the xword. I was afraid to come here because someone might inadvertently dropped a clue. eg Jamaica Rum(mies) .
Richie Valens "Oh Donna" is the anthem of 50s music IMHO.
