Every day he'd come in and say, "Morning, give me the usual." Who would imagine he'd turn out to be such a hero? Winning that contest must have scrambled his brain! That day, shirt misbuttoned, baggy pants, looking insane.
"Today, I'll try eggs Benedict," he broke his normal pattern. It presaged what would come, what he'd enable to happen. He had a gravelly voice, it came across as slightly strange. But I hadn't realized his duties required such vocal a range.
Those were the days of the Web, reached by dial-up modem. And he made the sound that gained such opprobrium. He spent his days going "Weeeeee" into a microphone. When he quit, they had to switch to routers' silent tones!
So today the Jumble and the poem are like cousins, closely related. Naturally, since the Jumble itself is about jumbles. This is getting to be almost incestuous, or is it?
At any rate, it's witty and entertaining, and I like it a lot. Thanks to everyone concerned: Owen, David, Jeff.
Woohoo! I got this Jumble without cheating--thanks to Owen's poem. I was happy to get all four items, and delighted that I unscrambled the Jumble Champion's breakfast order "Good morning, give me the usual." But that long second word in the solution puzzled me, especially since there were so few vowels available. Owen's "eggs" helped me tremendously and so I got it! A wonderful Jumble with a totally delightful answer. Thank you, everybody!
Today's Jumble seemed easier than usual and I quickly solved it all including the scrambled "Give me the usual". That was fun! I prefer my eggs over easy. Wonderful poem, Owen, thank you. I hope you are feeling better.
The answer reminded me of the days when CB radios were a fad. It was when I had to drive across country several times, so of course I installed a radio and learned the lingo. Helpful truck drivers would warn me of police - "smokies" - lurking at upcoming mile-markers. Once, when I ran out of gas at 3 a.m. near Albuquerque, the local fire department answered my desperate 10-34 with a can of gasoline free of charge! Those were trusting times. ~ OMK
I've been thinking a lot about earlier discussions about letting no-reveal rule go, and while I think the no-spoilers policy is needed to meet our goal here, I do think an earlier closing time might be better. It would be more convenient for me if it were 2 hours earlier, but 9 hours earlier would also be reasonable -- noon Pacific time, 3 pm Eastern time. What say you?
2 hours or 9 hours? Nothing in between? If that's the choice, I'd opt for 2 hours earlier, 7pm Pacific time, 10pm Eastern time. But I can go with the majority's choice. (Though 9 hours earlier might be before some people have solved, which might mean they'd see the solution before they want to.)
I didn't restrict it to just those two choices. But since most probably do it in their morning papers, noon and later seemed like a reasonable closing time.

I had difficulty with the 2*6s. The riddle just popped.
