Mortals are allowed to ail, to feel sick and low. But leaders and chieftains must withstand any blow. General Grant caught a cold? Battle would not wait. Tho he was feeling poorly, his reins he had to take.
When the clan MacGregor was bat'ling a Viking raid, If the laird had the grippe, in bed he wasn't laid. He still girded up his kilt, his tartan bravely showing, Led his men to the fight, plaid in the weather blowing!
The barons of industry, Edison, Ford, or Rockefeller, Tho suffering with the gout, still they held together! Mergers managed over meals, biographers for brunch, Oil and steel and autos, and gas for station pumps!
You know, after I read one of your poems I can always see what you've done, and how you did it. But I could never come up with a way to weave together a bunch of totally disparate words into a coherent whole. This poem is just one more example of you making a virtue out of necessity and it blows my mind.
Well, enough of that.
The jumble clues were easy to discern. The solution didn't immediately come to mind because I missed the obvious. Too obvious, maybe? But a few minutes later it came.
Do you remember spelling/vocab lessons back in grade school? You had a list of maybe 10 words, and were to use each one in a sentence? I figured the teacher had enough to do reading so many sentences, so I only wrote 5 -- but used two words in each. No teacher ever chastised me for my laziness!
Good to see you back, Owen, and in your stride. Those true leaders; ah, they are indeed a hardy lot. You match them, sir, in your poetic tenacity.
Yes, the jumble words were easy. The solution required neither effort nor time, given that the cue word was a vowel-demanding "an," and there are a limited batch of 4-letter words referencing "car" and beginning with a vowel. ~ OMK
I've been doing poorly with the jumble lately. Too busy to concentrate, I think. Yesterday I just gave it up. Today, however, the solution instantly appeared, almost automatically! Then unscrambling the words was almost a grant from above.
Owen, as a teacher I would have rewarded you for your creativity! I agree with Sandyanon that no matter what words are thrown at you, you cobble a coherent poem. Bravo!
Sorry to be late to the party. Always delightful poem, Owen--many thanks. Got all four Jumble words easily this morning, but I blanched when I saw that long second word in the solution. But amazingly it just filled in automatically, after I got the first word. Yay!

I didn't do well on #3 . Finally got it and as OMK said the first riddle word was obvious .
Glad you're back Owen . I thought about putting together something for yesterday but WHEAT didn't seem to fit at all.
