Dec. 9, 2018 Sunday

|| kinky, icily, dragon, torrid, a daily grind. || busily, enzyme, mascot, potted, dredge, indict, it remains to be seen.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Pouf was a dragon, but not conventional.
If he wasn't different, it wasn't intentional.
For instance, virgins, he eschewed the lot.
No, a torrid harlot was his favorite nosh!

Other wyrms called him weird, kinky to boot.
Didn't bother Pouf, he didn't give a toot.
His toots, in fact, were uniquely his own.
He didn't use fire, he blew icy mint foam!

No grinding wheel kept Pouf's claws sharp.
Scratching post use each day did the part!
It once had belonged to a saber-tooth cat.
An estate sale was where Pouf had got it at.

The creepy Dr. Moreau is at it again,
Trying to create a new breed of men.
Busily puttering with potted ferns,
Searching for magic enzymes or germs.

"I'm trying to create intelligent beasts,
That on sports sidelines can compete!
Dredge their animal wiles for strategy
To coach their teams to sure victory!"

"The day will come," he says with aplomb,
"When team mascots will not be dumb!
Old ones that remain, seen in faux fur,
Will be indicted for fraud if they confer."

I don't usually comment on Sundays, preferring to indulge the one day of rest. But Owen's fresh facility with meter inspires me to break my silence. These two pieces left me gasping with joy! As an old actor, I couldn't resist speaking them aloud. We are all regularly impressed by our genius's ability to produce brilliant tales in rhyme, but now he is becoming the conqueror of rhythm--in my book the more difficult test of the true poet.
To hell with kidney stones; our heavenly bard surpasses all limits!

I can only give my enthusiastic support to Ol'Man Keith's joyful tribute to Owen's poems. The work and skill that went into today's offerings on the crossword site and here on the Jumble is just astonishing! Thank you, Owen--you amaze us.

I loved today's Jumble. Did have to work on number 1 and goofed on number 3, but I still got the solution without any problems, and love the noun/verb pun.

Loved your choice of "wyrms" as a nod to medievalism, and in the same line as a re-working of a recent Broadway title!
And of course "Pouf" is a loving spin on Puff (of "magic" fame) and the Brit slang for Gay.
You continue to amaze with how densely you pack internal gags.

Well, whew! J4 wasn't much of a problem -- cleverish pun. And cute poem; I thought Pouf was an inspired choice.

But J6 nearly defeated me. I had to go to Owen's creepily creative poem for help with the very first clue word. And even with that, looking at all the letters, I couldn't decide among the many two-letter possibilities for the solution. Had to go away, come back, and then reread the poem many times. Finally hit on a useful set of two-letter words, and after much staring at the remaining letters, the V8 can hit me right in the head. Of course!

Thank you, Owen, for 5, count-em,five great poems in one day. I think all your Corner poems today were A's, by the way. Especially like the first one, but the other two were also "inspiring". Believe me, your efforts are always appreciated.

The first 2 lines of the last stanza stand on their own as a warning to fans of "cute" mascots.
