The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Politics and statesmanship so often get confused! And leadership and governance add to the motley stews! Politicians are the vipers, that make bywords of them all, But those with no campaigning skill will never get a call!
A statesman without conviction is a spinster still unwed, But should dogma preclude compromise, it's still a lonely bed A leader must influence men, as a paragon and orator. Sometimes lead the charge, at others listen for rapport.
To govern well takes wisdom, no person has sufficient, But advisors chosen wisely can fill in with assistance. Bartending may be the pivot skill, pouring what is needful, Commiserate with pro and con, work for the good of people!
Cool poem, working in all the theme words cleverly, Owen--many thanks. I thought I was going to have a lot of trouble with this Jumble, and the #4 daunted me a bit. But after I played around with possible solutions, I got it. Very clever. I think I'm going to have to pour myself a little glass of that stuff at dinner tonight.
Well done, Owen! With such diversity between the first word and the other three I couldn't imaging how you would versify them. Today was much easier than yesterday for me. Like Misty I played around with the letters from #4 to finally get it.
This jumble was another where I had to work back from the solution (pretty obvious, very funny, pun) to get a clue word. That was number four, as with Lucina and Misty.
Hate not being in full agreement about the poem, but although I think it is clever in working all the disparate words in, I couldn't really follow the logic of many of the statements in it. They seemed kind of unconnected to each other, and in some cases not internally logical. I'm probably picking nits here, as I am definitely very literal-minded.
I think I got 1,2,3 and went to the xword When I came back to the J and got the obvious word and #4 I was able to SUSS out the riddle.
It's funny how I can knock off these xwords but get stymied on the riddles . Sandy you seem to have a knack.
Let me reread that poem . Obviously Owen as Lucina said had disparate words to unite in a theme . Essentially the same skills a bartender uses:tact, listening, lack of bias... Would make for good political leadership. eg raport
Sandy, I love you! Constructive comments are always appreciated! Politics and statesmanship are often contrasted, but the others I just threw in for padding. I thought I did a decent job of it, but you're right, they were sort of cobbled cliches, with sloppy seam showing!
