It seemed the war had gone on forever. What it was for was forgotten altogether. In the trenches, reality was dirt and grime; Blood that had been inside a pal at one time.
No one was a hero, or held an aspiration To do anything but live thru this abomination! Men below envied the pilots in clean air, Pilots envied jeeps, unlike clay pigeons at a fair!
Those who would go home would miss parts. Some an arm or leg, all with injured hearts. Like a silent thunderbolt, a jagged knife, Standing forever between the past and life.
I thought I would miss doing a poem here, I was so sick with a kidney stone. It started Monday morning, and then just ended an hour or so ago! I've been reading up on it, and saw it could take weeks or even a month or more to heal itself, so my little over 2 days was unusual! It is a warning to me to keep more hydrated, a lot more!
To anticipate your questions, I was in ROTC, but 4-F'ed out of the draft, so I've never been in a real battle.
Oh dear, so sorry to hear about your pain problem, Owen. Hope you get some real relief soon, and thank you for coming back with your poems this morning. Your Jumble poem is certainly sad, but it's nice to see all the words and the solution. I was delighted to get all four words and the solution with no problem, and thought the Jumble answer was funny.
Very glad you're back, Owen, both on the Corner and here. Sorry about your painful stone. I'm fortunate to have been spared that, but from what I read it can be the very worst pain of all. I do hope you can take time off--whenever you need--and know that our worry is a minor consideration compared to your health needs. ~ OMK
As to the J solution, one of the words is the one you first "see" when you look at that picture. It confirms the rule that whichever word is obviously avoided in the cartoon's dialog & captions is bound to be in the solution. ~ OMK

The jumble clues came easily, and, after a bit, so did the punny solution.
The poem was a reminder of WW1, a terrible war not in any of our memories. No more to say.

I echo"Welcome and bon sante. A fast four and riddle was easy enough once I copied the letters in a legible script
At hs reunions people just assumed that I was anti Jane Fonda. Uhuh . And not because of the movie poster for Cat Ballou
