|| || habit, depth, butane, walnut, what he'd "taut".

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Christmas was coming, and Harold was a mess!
His shopping list was a vision of emptiness!
What to get Katie? What to get Sal?
What should he get for his closest pal?

Each year all his shopping at Wal*Mart he'd buy.
Sal joked that her husband was a Wal*Nut guy!
It wasn't a bad habit, their variety was vaunted,
They usually stocked everything what he'd wanted.

But this year he'd vowed to think with more depth
When deciding what each of closest would get.
For Sal, some exercise equipment, he thought,
To help her get those stomach muscles more taut.

For his daughter? Katie wanted a robot doll baby,
But that was so sexist -- a Battle-Bot kit, maybe?
Cook-outs, brats were all that Wally would make --
A butane grill, and a cook-book on tofu steaks!

The day after Christmas, Harold's angels might sing.
But no one else will -- to Harold no one is speaking!

Thank you, thank you, Owen. I could not have gotten this Jumble without your detailed, clever, and finally, sad, verse. My problem was with #3--I just couldn't figure it out. But there it was, in your poem, and that's all it took. I already had the first word of the solution, and you helped me get the other two. A fun Jumble cartoon and reveal, following a delightful poem by you.

I'm getting tired of missing a clue word and having to work backwards from the solution! What's wrong with me? Happened again today with the third clue. The solution came without much difficulty and without much humor also, I thought. Usually they're such fitting puns.

I was anxious to read your poem today, Owen, to see how you'd worked in that third clue -- so completely unpoetic a word. But of course, Christmas gifts can be anything, can't they! Ingenious way to link everything. BTW, I think Harold deserves the opprobrium. I mean -- tofu steaks!!

We just had that riddle key word*. This one went as fast as I've ever solved. I think I had to rearrange some letters, I'm such a nut but I got it done .

My newspaper habits have been rearranged by tbtimes rearrangement of the comics pages. Today the J and the Bridge came first so I do them first .

In fact I haven't got to Luann yet. Did Tara flunk the chem test?

*This week's CC i think. Except sometimes I do the NYT Sunday even though a week late

I thought this was fun. Yes, it was quick, but the solution was pleasant enough.
Owen's poem made me a little sad--poor Harold!--but I consoled myself that Harold is fiction, and my shopping list may yet turn out to be successful!
Had a very pleasant visit last night from a former student, one who starred in a successful action TV show back in the '90s. He has kept up a solid career both on stage and screen since then. Among other tales he told us of the many broken bones and shrapnel hits he's endured while filming over the years.
Acting ain't for sissies.

Like Sandyanon, I often work backward by solving the J first. Today I immediately had the solution then went back to unscramble. Owen, you gave me the third word. Thank you! I find the pun quite funny since I am one has taught for umpteen years.
OMK: What a beautiful relationship you have with your former students!
