The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Yes, he certainly did.
Absolutely right, Sandy! Like a lot of surgeons, he tended to insert himself into many subjects.
I believe he was quite bossy too, giving orders left & right. He tried taming various animals, using a commanding tone, and once bade a panda "Sit!". But the beast was already a-squat, so the effect was minimal.

Got up early, knocked off the J and the xword. J's were pretty easy. I guessed the first, third and fourth word and voila "riddle" popped.
Speaking of... "A POP" seems to be regular conversational fodder.
Awaiting further adventures of Jorge

Looked forward to Owen's poem on this Jumble--hope we get it later, I'll keep checking in. Delightful Jumble, I got all four words without any problem and the solution jumped right up--I never even had to look at the letters. Interesting information--1894 seems early for the invention of latex gloves. Is that a nurse's uniform the young woman is wearing? Your joke about surgeons cracked me up O'Man Keith, but not sure I got your panda spoonerism, if that's what it was. Anyway, fun comments all around.
Not a Spoonerism, Misty, just a rhyme. But check each offering for metrical matching. That is often the hardest trick to bring off. That, and the multiple rhymes through a phrase.

It is quite a trick as well as putting the diagonals of the xword into some kind of crazy phrase. Somehow we've got to find a way to merchandise those talents of you and Owen.

Thanks, W.C., you are kind, but for me it is enough to keep the Ol' Walnut occupied & active!
Misty, I was chewing on another possibility for today. The image of the panda appealed to me, but maybe this one is more to your liking:
I believe it was back in the '50s when my little sister started practicing with a hula hoop. She kept chanting, "Hula hoop, hula hoop!" I remember calling to her at one point, "Pam, it's just a stupid fad! Abandon it!"

BTW, it would be impossible to do a spooner on today's solution. The two key words begin with the same phoneme.
