The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

We need something powerful today to take our minds off a lame jumble. We may just have to put up with a strong echo, some hearty sound-alike words, or a stout rhyme.
-- Or --
We might try a reversed Spooner that makes about as much sense as today's solution.
This would be a reference to a boxing spectator who has shaken off a manic bookie hyping the match--because he simply can't abide a tout.

FLN:
It took OSTRICH of the imagination to come up with that "BEAR" gag, Misty.

But it wasn’t long before Spooner SPIDER ‘nuther clue:
“OWL have to get the forensic boys on it, EIDERDOWN here or, if they QUAIL at the scene, back at the LAB."

I hope this rhyming is stout enough

"Vamp, you say? I am Bilbo a most respectable
Hobbit, I come on business to lay it on the table.
No alibi will suffice if Thorin King becomes aware
Of my mission. Please inform Bard, That I'm here."

"So, this is the missing number fourteen,
Creeping about, foraging, somehow unseen.
Enact business, you say? Whom do you serve?
Perhaps a good pummeling is what you deserve."

But Bard and Thranduil were kind and wise
And seeing what he'd brought was quite a surprise.
"This was ill-gotten, the King will be enraged
But call it my share, perhaps he'll be assuaged"

They were amazed when the Arkenstone was revealed
Shining and glistening. Soon a bargain was sealed.
And then Bilbo espied an old gray bearded individual
"Do you remember, Gandalf?" said the elf Thranduil.
"It's about time" cried Bilbo, with hugs of joy
"You never cease to amaze me, my Took of a boy"

Had a terrible time with clue one, but figured it out. Once having all the letters, the solution was pretty easy. I didn't think it was great, but not awful either. Gave me a tiny grin, but no chuckle.

I am glad Bilbo is doing well, and it's good to have Gandalf back. Thanks, Wilbur

Loved the boxing Jumble this morning. Had to work on the second word and wondered if the fourth one was correct. But then read the cartoon and the solution popped right up, and I had indeed gotten all the words. Woohoo!

You're in sharp and clever form today, Ol'Man Keith. Loved all the funny animal allusions to yesterday's Jumble and discussion. Also enjoyed your first gloss on today's cartoon answer, even if I didn't find the Jumble lame. No matter, it's your gift with words that always delights.

Wilbur, I love the way you work all the Jumble words and solution into your delightful Bilbo story which has gotten more cheerful and fun every day. Many thanks for your gift too.

And always nice to see you checking in, Sandyanon.

Have a good day, everybody.

Misty, the cheer is about to vanish when Bilbo gets back and Thorin figures out that his little burglar has heisted his precious Arkenstone.

Meanwhile, did someone mention crows? Now what is that all about.

I lift my stein to you, Wilbur!

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make two senses at once, the lowest bar for a play on words. When you break it up--in order to highlight the internal word “bout”--it loses all sense.
I tried to help it along by re-ordering the words in my 2nd version, the Spoonerism. But I am old-school about word play (as I suppose you have guessed). Shouldn't a true gag work without our having to make adjustments and allowances?

STEIN misspelled as "stien" caused my FIW in Saturday's tester. If I drank stout or even the alleged "bitter" IPA I'd insist on a mug.

I'll have to take another look at Misty's play on "Bear", bare?
