The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Was the mansion haunted?
So it had been vaunted.
Just to spend a night
Was to receive a fright.
Reggie felt quite uneasy,
His stomach also queasy,
But he'd vowed to outdo
All the others in the crew.
Not another one of them
Had lasted in past one A.M.
He strode in with all the bluster
That his shaking legs could muster,
Then he tiptoed once inside
To the library to hide.
Dust was thick upon the shelves,
Books lined up like evil elves.
He took a tome to pass the time.
But opened up, it held a shine!
The page's words, in his head
Formed a voice that clearly said:
"Reggie, you're unwelcome here
In this house of primal fear!
If you dare to stay, beware.
Death will lurk in any chair!
If sleep you seek upon a bed
Torture there you'll find instead!
Leave in peace while still you may,
Or in pieces you will be, come day!"
Reggie tore out like a jet,
It wasn't even midnight yet!
The book he left behind in haste,
Floated back into its place.
Its laughter was an eerie sound
Would chill the blood of any 'round.
On its binding, the title read.
"Living Book of Existential Dread"!
What a poem, what a story! I wonder how any of the rest of the crew stayed even til one a.m. Maybe they didn't go into the library. Congratulations on creating a truly scary atmosphere.
The jumble didn't present any big problem, especially after I rejected the idea of 'pottie' -- shades of raising toddlers. The solution was clear once the letters were all there, and kind of cute.
Amazing poem, Owen--this will be one of my favorites! It helped me get items 3 and 4 which gave me a little trouble, but I still had to look up the solution. Cute cartoon and cute reveal. Hey, it's Saturday, never my best day for solving stuff, but nice to look forward to Sunday.
I had got the four J's but couldn't get the riddle. Owen supplied the key word.
Excellent poem. I had to get to the Xword knowing it would be a two hour slog .
