The plot to kill the Emperor was off to a start.
His assassination would give the rebels heart!
The freedom fighters had a fervor for the plot,
But flying off alone would surely get them caught.
The cabal of five knew the impact this would make.
The empire might become a fiasco in its wake!
In tightly bonded lands, chaos would be ascendant.
Every shabby province would seek its independence!
A servant would deliver to the Emperor in his suite
A savory soup for lunch, with fennel-seasoned meat.
Also seasoned with a toxin, a minute drop is all,
But from that floral distillate, an empire will fall!
I looked mainly for clue words when I first checked your poem, Owen, and didn't get the somewhat sad story until later. Had trouble with two of the Jumble words and appreciated your help, and then finally got the solution. Fun cartoon, but who are those guys with mustaches? Not the Wright brothers, surely. Thanks again for your help, Owen.
Very ingenious to incorporate both jumbles in one poem. Must have been difficult.
Yes, ok, I said it's no biggie, but I have a burning curiosity to understand whether it's that you cannot or that you will not access the regular jumble cartoons. It would certainly be less work, and they are quite clever.

I started running my own cartoons when Mr. Knurek* threatened to sue me for copyright infringement. I was thinking I'd go back to the newspaper cartoons once I'd been doing it long enough to get off his radar. But I've found I rather enjoy the searching! Especially when I can put my own spin on it (avoiding any other copyright claims). E.g., the J4 cartoon I swiped whole, but the J6 I wrote my own caption for, replacing the completely different original one.
*David Hoyt has been pleasant, and doesn't seem to mind his part of the Jumble being copied.
BTW, the cartoon search has so far always taken longer than writing the poem.
I've been wanting to do a combined poem for weeks, but this is the first time Erato saw a way to do it!
Well, now I understand why you backed off the newspaper cartoons; seems like an excellent reason. I think it's a shame in some ways, because I have always enjoyed the newspaper jumble style. Too bad we can't have both, though I do check the newspaper version for daily puzzles too. I've just moved my print subscription of the LA Times to Sundays only, so will rely on the Internet.
Applause again for being able to pack so much into a single poem.
