The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Pick any.

In a land where blond bombshells compete,
It is a truism that Swedish girls are sweet!
Fall in love with one, you'll want to elope --
But that would leave your wife at home to cope!

Sweden's at the arctic, a land with summer sun,
But when winter happens, long cold nights are bum.
It's good that it's a forest land of woody trees,
With fuel for the hearth-fire warding off the freeze!

This is one, pre-blog, that I wouldn't have bothered with, because the solution seemed so plain I didn't need any of the clues. My very first thought was that it might be a takeoff from Stockholme.

Our cat died yesterday. We had no premonition of it at all. She was lying next to me, had a sudden seizure, then went limp, and within 5 minutes while Bren was stroking her, she was gone. She was our only pet, about 10 years old. She was mainly Bren's cat, even though she occasionally cuddled up to me (mainly while I was trying to type). Bren fed her, stroked her more, and, since my infirmities worsened, cleaned her litter-box. I'm a bit worried at how little emotion I feel about it tho. When I said we'll get another cat, Bren said no. A discussion we'll have later when the shock wears off.

"Homes Sweet Homes?"
Woody was doing his homework while his widow Mom was away,
"running off" to Reno, to the flat of his new Dad, Ray.
He was happy to mind the Texas home, to help in her plans to "elope,"
'cuz he hadn't seen such smiles in a while, such beams of radiant hope.

Woody was good at geography; only arithmetic gave him grief.
Division made him shudder; at subtraction he felt like a thief.
He was OK at addition, he was quite the passable summer.
But fractions? Hah! Don't even ask about that brain-wreck of a bummer.

His newly expanding family would soon add up to three.
Where would they live? He studied his maps. They should leave it up to me,
he thought, for a true romantic whirl, they'd dwell some months in old Ft. Worth,
then vanish like magic to Reno--all three!--a commute from hearth to hearth!

Two delightful poems, Owen and Ol' Man Keith--a wonderful way to start the day.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your cat, Owen. Losing an animal is always heartbreaking, but especially when it happens so suddenly. Our 17 year old dachshund Dusty was taken by a coyote last fall--one yelp, and he was gone. Please give our sympathy to Bren for her, and your, loss.

Sorry to read of the death of your cat, Owen. At least it seems like a painless, or relatively pain-free way to go. And with your wife's loving strokes.
Nature's timing makes sure that we outlive most pets, probably so they don't have to mourn for us and need to fend for themselves. Nature figures we are the stronger and can handle the grief.
I don't look forward to the demise of our three little guys. They are all in fine health and active these days, but they are also in their early teens.

Enjoyed your poem. A little impractical fantasy in the first verse, very practical outlook in the second.

"Trite, light love story"

Woody really yearned to elope,
to marry Charlotte was his hope.
To romance he was a newcomer
but he courted her all summer.
She responded right from the start,
so he proposed as they sat by the hearth.
She said, "My darling Woody,
you are such a kind and sweet goody.
It would be my greatest pride
to now become your bride."
They married and bought a new home,
and to celebrate, he wrote her a poem.
"Charlotte, let us no longer roam
but just enjoy our home sweet home."

(P.S. The problem: what rhymes with "home" except comb, dome, foam, gnome, poem, and roam?)

I guess the appropriate answer to your closing question is,
"What doesn't rhyme with home?!"

A good, warm-hearted poem from you, Misty. I particularly enjoyed where Charlotte calls him her "sweet goody"!
How cute was that!

I have a reservation for my first Covid shot at the Bren Center at 1:30. Hope they don't run out of the good stuff before it's my turn! Cross your fingers!

Just got my shot--ahead of my appt. time. They're very well organized. I'm waiting 15 minutes after while they observe for any reaction.. I got the Moderna version, which seems to be the more effective serum. Yay!
The one thing to watch out for is the lack of policing social distancing. Glad I wore two masks.

Congrats on getting your first vaccination. Interesting, OMK, that you also observed lack of social distancing. Is it the common impression that it's not necessary when wearing a mask? Because I had been clearly informed that both are appropriate together for safety.
Believe I'll take a cue from you and wear two masks when I go back for my second shot.

Congratulations, OMK! After getting the UCI Health message, I phoned in Friday morning at 8:15 and got a message saying to try again later, and then got a message saying that all the vaccines were occupied and try again in a few days. I'm feeling hopeless that I'll ever be able to get it--but I'm so glad and thankful that you got it. Hurray!

It is strange, Misty.
When I first read about sign-ups, I went to the first online address I saw posted. All the times were gone already. But then I searched through my backlog of emails and found the one that was addressed specifically to me, that said I could only sign up for Friday the 22nd.
The weird thing is I knew other people were getting appointments on other, earlier days, but I don't know how they were doing that. I just settled for the 22nd. When I clicked that link, they offered me all sorts of times. I picked a convenient early afternoon slot.
As it turned out, it not only worked smoothly for me, I saw at least 70, maybe more people being serviced around the same time.
I have no idea how many other groups were being included when I was there, but you should not have the difficulty you are finding!

There is no central dispenser of information, no way to check on all the different ways an individual might be processed.

I'm on some kind of VA list. GP is useless it seems for everyone. I have two 85yr olds who have no idea how to get the vaccine. But this is florida, a thoroughly corrupt State, top to bottom.

Owen sorry about your cat. I see we had a couple of Woodys today, one young one not.

I just finished Elvis in Las Vegas a history of that crazy town. A fellow Marine told me he was going to Reno when he got out. He was a Harvard Guy. I was hanging with these enlisted guys although I was a Louie.

They were easy to get along with. I had some officer buds who were in recon. I suspect that they may have jetted back and forth to 'Nam for special ops.

Sorry I haven't been visited by the muse lately.

Ps, no problem with the J today although I did it a few days ago. I found the Sat CC tough even for a Saturday.

They'll be some kvetching from the CC crowd about the clueing. It seem more NYTimes like.
