The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

I have no idea what happened to the border of that first word, but I trust it won't really slow anyone down.

It's still a few days until I retire, and I'll still be around even after that. The Ark.Dem.-Gazette only carries the daily puzzle, so the Sunday puzzle still needs to be pieced together from the Chi.Trib's site. I'll wait until Archie has the daily fully under control before I drop that in his lap.

Archie
, you ready to take over setting up the blog for July 4? I'll leave it to you, but I'll look over your shoulder so you don't need to worry about any snafu.

“(OTB) Advice to the Nerds”

Nobody who aims to weasel out of his chits
figures on a bookie’s higher duty.
As much as welshers wish their IOUs quits,
management thinks each debt a beauty
to be respected. “Enforcers” bring out the yellow
in reluctant debtors. Each brute, each oafish fellow
spawns screams & hollers,
trading stitches for dollars.

"Musical Venture"

Phil loved playing the cello,
while wearing a jacket that was yellow.
Nobody's dreams could have been higher--
he figured he wanted to play in a choir,
so he weaseled himself a hitch
and stitched a number of songs with great pitch.
Having listened to the words of the wise,
Phil's performance got him first prize.

Again, I did not take my day off. I would not want to be away while the "hand-over" is in progress, from Owen to Archie.
It just feels like a time to be "present." Later I can make up for the missed days off, when we feel more secure.

Misty ~ It seems Phil managed to finagle an unusual gig, to play cello with a choir. It's the sort of thing Yo-Yo Ma* would do. And I guess the oddball nature of it is why he had to "weasel" his way into such an arrangement.

I bet one can't get hired just by showing good references.
That yellow top says "I'm a showman," so that may have played a part in his winning a prize. Not every fair-to-good cellist wins anything.
Good for him, say I!
Sometimes you have to blaze your own path.

Mr. Ma was on our campus some years ago, and he met with my ArtsBridge group. A most courteous gentleman, he was generous with his time and his attention to my leading cello scholar.

PS, Misty ~ Funny, how we both used "weasel" with respect to human behavior, rather than posting about mink or ferrets.
It is that word that led me to the world of quasi-legal gambling, as I'm pretty sure that's a realm for petty-chiselers, poor credit risks who lay bets in the desperate hope of a killing that will rescue them from the debt they already can't pay.

You used the word in lieu of a normal music contract negotiation. I wonder if Phil resorted to bribery, or if he merely inflated his résumé.

It was a tough one, CEh!
I can see how you couldn’t have it in your sights till you found that “ac” ending.
I didn’t appreciate the value of knowing the opening letter—until I eliminated three vowels in my first wild guess. That narrowed things a lot!

Ol Man Keith, your poor nerd had a much tougher time than Phil, with his quasi-legal gambling. But your question about "weasel" makes me wonder if Phil wasn't also resorting to some under-the-counters moves? Makes me respect him a bit less than when I started.

Nice to see your Wordle today, Canadian Eh!.

Archie, a salute to you for becoming our new leader. How very kind of you to take over Owen's tough job. We welcome you with much gratitude.

I had a real scare today—when my iPad lost its charge completely & would not accept a re-charge. It was dead for nearly three hours, and I have no idea what was wrong. I re-booted it at 1% power, but that made no difference.
Finally, I asked my wife to look at it. She has the magic touch.
At first, she couldn’t get a response, but after about an hour, it accepted her re-charge.
Her re-boot finally worked.
We still have no idea what was wrong.
We are so-o dependent on these gadgets!
