The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Sam Sloan, Paranormal Investigator, had a major problem:
A poltergeist in City Hall, causing fluctuations, quantum!
The Mayor had called on Sam to exterminate the pest.
And Sam had a new E.M.P. bomb he was wanting to test.
City Hall was evacuated, no one willing to risk his neck
Where chairs flew around, and sorted files had gone to heck!
Cautiously Sam entered, a device like a Rubik's cube in hand.
Headed to the Mayor's office as the place to make his stand.
And evil chill infused the air, a cold paralysis ensued
From Sam's feet, up thru his khakis, numbness did obtrude.
Thru his shirt and out the sleeves, only his head was free.
Then the poltergeist appeared, as a tiny chimpanzee.
" 'ou mus' know I've come for 'ou, since 'ou have me in duress,"
Sam labored, "Bu' while I hold 'is cube, 'ou'll vanish when I press!"
The monkey reached up and plucked the cube from his hand.
Sam tongued the transmitter hidden in his jaw, and BLAM!
The Ectoplas-Magnetic Pulse erased the poltergeist existence!
One more P.I. case closed, as Sam was freed in an instant!
Great story, Owen, with your characteristic kicker at the end. And you did tell us what EMP was, which I had been wondering about since the first verse.
The clues came easily, though I did have to write out the third one's letters, reorganized. And the solution came a word at a time, from readily inferring what the last one must be and working with the remaining letters. Kinda humorous play on words.
My goodness, what an amazing poetry writing day you're having, Owen. Many thanks for all of them. Had only a little trouble with the last word in the Jumble, and even after I got it, had trouble with the solution. But loved the cartoon with the colorful spotted giraffe and the cute couple with their green, if sadly wrecked, jeep.
So interesting to me is how differently we can each approach the jumbles. I pay relatively little attention to the cartoon, only looking at how it provides context for the caption. I focus on the clues and mostly on the solution -- in terms of how clever and/or humorous I think it is, or is not.
Would be interested in others' thoughts on this.
Very clever, this Owen chap, no? Just when I was wondering why his PI was speaking with a Cornish accent, he answered the mystery for us!
A rollicking good yarn, that!
Today's cartoon had me worried for the giraffe's safety. I once had a giraffe kiss me in, of all places, the zoo in the middle of Milano. So I have a special affection for the animal. I worried that this fellow should keep his distance from that smashed automobile, with its burning hot metals and potential for exploding!
I'm so glad he missed this wreck! Whew!

Love hearing your giraffe-kiss story, Ol'Man Keith--how sweet!
E.M.P. is Electro-Magnetic Pulse. It's a side effect of atomic bomb blasts, lightning strikes, and solar flares. It fries any electronics within range. The 1859 Carrington Event, a solar flare caused a world-wide EMP that fried telegraphs and caused auroras almost to the equator.
I always read the cartoon for context, but before starting this blog didn't really pay much attention to it. It usually wasn't funny in its own right, and sometimes even seemed to distract from the Jumble's humor. Now I do look at it more closely, but still consider it secondary to the puzzle.
Thanks for the feedback, Owen.
