Mortar shells were blasting, suppressive fire was laid,
When Sarge and private Toomy hunched into the glade.
Surrounded by a stand of oaks, sounds of war were muted.
Conflicts of the wider world here were not disputed.

A wizened man with worried mien stood among the trees
Pleading with his eyes how vital to be left alone in peace.
To Toomy's eyes the tree barks switched to sculpted children.
"The fog of war," rasped Sarge, "playing with our vision."

It touched the two men's hearts, this place was sacred.
Dryads, ever children, here whirled and danced elated.
But now the glade was threatened by man's devastation.
Could these two brave soldiers give it a preservation?

The men looked at each other, their will was not impaired,
By their own decision, both vowed this grove be spared!
They returned to the battle, and as if shielded by divinity
Silenced mortar and machine gun. Of the glade, no memory.

A beautiful poem, Owen, one of your best, I think. It is technically solid, but its main appeal is thematic. The oaken grove transforms--or. Is transformed by--the eyes of the soldiers. The place and the men work on each other to achieve peace. It may be unrealistic, but it offers a sweet solace, as if "shielded by divinity."

The jumble seemed super easy, with the kind of solution that pops to mind even before solving the words.
Regarding the solution, while thinking of a rhyming hint, I drifted far afield. I found myself contemplating a TV prison show I've been watching. In prison they don't put up with snitches or nut-jobs, right? They'll strangle cell mates who show signs of being a "rat," & they'll stick a shiv in a "squirrel" rather than tolerate such behavior.

Your poems this morning are indeed amazing, Owen--congratulations and many thanks! I breezed through this Jumble, and also got all four words without hesitation, and the solution popped right up. I love this sweet family cartoon, especially the color version with all the different colored shirts and laundry. A Friday delight. But O'Man Keith, your Jumble solution joke is in a whole other universe.

Late today. Yes, I truly enjoyed the poem. I am always struck by how you can produce poems on very serious and moving themes, but then also funny poems on lighthearted themes. Very eclectic output, Owen.

The jumble was too, too simple, both clues and solution. In fact, the solution appeared before the clues. Clever idea, but it made me think of how much I personally prefer toploading washers.

I thought I posted earlier. I actually had LEDGE for #1 . Then I looked for the G in GIVE- nada. I thought the TBTimes made a mistake.

Nope. C'est Moi.

Great poem. We are the beneficiaries of Owen's manic phase.
