Eric the Bald is little noted in Norse lore,
The Viking was scared to sail far from shore.
And when he did venture across the sea,
He stayed with the ship to avoid the melee.
Despite his low standing, reports were the key.
He fudged the papers the King was to see.
He was deemed worthy for honors to befall,
And knelt before the King in the banquet hall.
But a Viking piped up, "The Bald one's a fraud!"
Another chimed in, "He's worse than a dog!"
The King had begun, and was lief to proceed,
So ignored the attempts to so rudely intercede.
"Eric the Bald, as a boon for your bravery,
I give you a quest, to disprove any knavery!
Return with valor, my daughter you may marry,
(A good-looking girl, although a bit hairy)."
"In Iceland is a volcano, with lava boiling over.
It's not now erupting, though it is a smoker.
Loki is there, or so I've reliably been told.
Deliver to him a message, to prove you are bold."
(Eric the Bald was never heard from again.)
Well, he may be heard from again, depending on tomorrow's words and Erato's mood. This story went way awry from what I was planning, and two stanzas longer besides! But I did want to get Loki in, since he's a homonym for today's solution.
Thank you, Owen, for adding Eric t.B.to the sagas & eddas of tradition. I do hope we'll be hearing from him again. If memory serves, we don't have another plain coward among the regular Viking cast, so he may bring a touch of realism to the ultra-macho tales.
As for today's pianist, I imagine she will also be playing slow-ly. I applaud her determination to perform despite her handicap.
The show must &c., &c.

This jumble was as easy as the proverbial pie, or as abc, whichever is easier.
I enjoyed the poem's story immensely, especially because -- believe it or not, Owen -- the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the jumble solution was that trickster, Loki. So I figured, when I saw your Norse theme, that he would be part of it. Was he your inspiration?
Delightful Monday poem, Owen--thanks for helping to get our week off to a great start. I had trouble only with the second puzzle word--even though words with only a single vowel are inevitably easy. So I first went to see if I could get the easy six letter solution--and got it instantly--which gave me the missing word. Yay! Sweet cartoon, with the neat necklace or collar decoration on the pianist's formal dress, and so sorry to see her bandaged hand. I liked the variety of hairdos and outfits on the three folks in the back, and thought it was especially neat that they all have different drinks. Lovely Monday Jumble picture. Just wish we could have heard the piano music.
Absolutely, Loki was my inspiration. I haven't mentioned it in a while, but I used to construct cryptic crosswords for several years, under the pseudonym Loki. A trickster constructing tricky puzzles. Also my name: Lorion, Owen K., I.
😊 👍👍
Love the explanation of your Loki connection! The jumble cartoon provides a fortuitous coincidence.
Is it a stretch to call it Fortean?
Anything that's a stretch is Fortean 😁 !
And BTW, I'm pure Scandinavian on my mother's side!
Maybe we're related. I'm 14% Scandinavian, or so says Ancestry's spit test.
I gotta hunch some Vikings landed near my Cornish cousins' trading posts...
