Steven King is an author of note
Of horror, on which some people dote.
He places his stories most often in Maine,
So stay away, or brace for some pain!

His plotting is cagey, he'll draw you in,
Then a pop! to scare you out of your skin!
To try to keep him out of your brain,
A tinfoil helmet might work... then again...

If you're not into horror, his writing is drivel,
There's no such things as spirits or devils.
But if you want your blood to run cold,
His slant might just fit you into his mold!

Jumble: clues pretty straightforward, solution not difficult after seeing the letters, and a very clever pun, IMHO.

Enjoyed the poem for its rhythm and fun ideas. However, I'm definitely not a fan of horror, including Stephen King. I wouldn't call his writing drivel, though, since I've never read any of it, so I'm in no position to judge.

A strong poem, Owen, presenting a clear-eyed critique of King's work. Like Sandy I'm no fan of supernatural horror, but I can appreciate horror as a consequence of real/believable situations. I have not read much of the King oeuvre, but I can recommend Misery as one that's grounded in psychological realism.

I have not been to Bangor, but I spent some weeks in southern Maine among coastal islands. I sailed in a lobster boat with some local friends. As the "new kid," my task was to stick the pegs in the lobsters' claws to keep them from pinching people.
I cut my hand on the side of the boat once as we docked. I was still bleeding when I got back to the inn where I was staying & was warned by the landlady to hold my hand high as I passed over her light-colored carpet.
"Hey-uh," she warned me "Dontcha be drippin' on my rug--that stain may not come out!"

Well, I needed Owen's poem to get the third word in the Jumble. It helped, many thanks, Owen. But although I, of course, knew the state, I still had a little trouble with the solution but got it in the end. Loved seeing the cartoon in color--especially the fellow's matching blue hat shirt and shoes. And Ol'Man Keith, your cute, if bloody, Maine story cracked me up.

Thanks, Misty! And it offers a true Spoonerism (maybe not a particularly funny one).

We band of brothers and sisters, we few, we happy few who post regularly on this jumble site; would that we were a larger band.
