FLN Please check my late night response, Wilbur, to your C&L post. Enjoyed it muchly.

——§——

Da Turd a’ da Herd (Turned Fibrous)”

Jersey Track’s horse treats:
The younger ones like carrot;
their elders, radish.

——§——

I saw 1 hint: the starting letter.
Then WC’s reference to Dickens & Pickwick.

I'm reposting fln

As Lois walked towards cousin Holly she thought 'Once bit twice shy"
Chet murmured, don't be deterred it's always hard the first try
Holly was dressed in typical fashion wearing a radish colored jersey
That struck a particular chord as Lois prayed. 'God have mercy'
Her elders in AA had advised: "Deary, make your tale short and sweet"
Lately, Lois had a one track mind, "Any success will be bittersweet"

"Still Beloved"

The elderly athlete was named Jack,
and still worked his way around the track.
Wearing his jersey he still looked cool
and, as always, enjoyed playing pool.
He also now planted radish in his garden
and was polite, and would small mistakes pardon.
From giving support he never deterred,
and today he's still keenly by fans preferred.

Sorry, Wilbur, haven’t been to the Corner yet.
I do these sites in reverse order.

Misty ~ Good for Jack, keeping his oar in—several oars it seems. Nice to know his fans are still loyal.
What, no Mrs. Jack? Color me surprised!

Four Wordle levels ain’t bad! It’s good for the soul, to reach your whole goal.

Funny verse, Ol' Man Keith--but do horses really like radish?

What a complicated cast of characters in your clever story this morning Wilbur--life is just swirling around them, isn't it?

Thank you both for cheering up our morning!

They do, Misty. You can Google it.

OK, Wilbur ~ Now I have finished the XWD and visited the Corner.
Not only does the Wordle word appear (29D), but my first attempt is there as well (the second half of 63A!).

The CC is a mind-reader!

The XWD also paid a tribute to our own Misty with a well-centered, down-to-earth honor at 51D.
Congratulations! I don't think any of the rest of us can ever expect to see our names emblazoned like that.

Sadly... we just lost our second pet to a coyote attack.
Our Chihuahua-mix "Nacho" was taken right out of our back yard in bright daylight by a coyote. My wife was outside too, not far from him, but the attack occurred so swiftly, she could do nothing to stop it.
She is devastated.
The predator just grabbed our 10-lb dog & jumped right back over the fence.

Our neighborhood has been preyed upon more and more in the past year. We understand that the coyotes were here first, but we MUST find a way to keep them away from our small pets.

My heart breaks for you and your wife, Keith. I know exactly what you're going through. I lost both of my dachshunds to coyotes, Misty about 5 or so years ago, Dusty about 3 years ago, and realized it's no longer safe for me to have a dog with coyotes in the area. It is so heartbreaking, I just feel so sad for you both--my heart is with you.

I remember, Misty, & I was thinking of you. In Uni Hills, people are proposing all sorts of solutions. But I am not in favor of harassing the coyotes, nor a believer in many of the "protective" measures. Too many of them depend on swift human reactions, but we just aren't programmed to respond so quickly.

I’m in favor of getting the Uni Hills association to raise the height of our fences AND to approve (and maybe pay for) roll bars. And maybe to explore humane ways to decrease the coyote population.
