Today’s Jumble haiku:

HeeHee, a Scorcher

In chess we two struck
a gentlemanly wager.
Scarce have moves so scorched!

When the demon devil shows himself to men
He will seem affable, on that you can depend.
A buddy in the bars,
Not a pirate dropping arrrs.
Be assured he will never be your friend!

Hee Haw Sources

You could wager your last dime,
That fiend would act up every time,
With scarcely a reason or rhyme.
On a scorching hot day,
Or blossom time in May,
Just like a checkmate in chess,
The noise was hard to suppress;
The braying of an ass in distress.

"Better Betting"

Cherry hated playing chess
because the outcome was always a mess.
She avoided any bet that was major
and tried as little as possible to wager.
And since her bets were pretty scarce,
her winnings didn't scorch and were sparse.

Still, she loved to go to the races
where she saw horses running many paces.
And betting there was fun
because she often won.

A lot of negativity in all your verses this morning, starting with Ol' Man Keith's nightmare critter who turned right up in CanadianEh!, poem, and in Owen's too! That helped me find him, neat and cleaned, even if not exactly a friend. Let's see if he'll turn up in a Wordle.

Yep, here he is, even if not exactly friendly, as I predicted:

Hey, let's not let him keep us from having a day full of friendly fun.

Your Cherry did her best, Misty, to alleviate the negativity. She saves her real betting for the horses because (a) she’s a winner, and (b) it’s fun to watch horses do their paces.
The scale is different as well, horses being much grander than a messy chess board!

I take it, CEh, you sometimes wager on chess, and do not find the outcome to your liking.
Or maybe it’s just that the mean Ol’ devil loves to give you terrible weather on your outdoor chess contests. Is that it?
Whatever the circumstances, we can agree: that fiend is not a pal to humanity.
