Today’s Jumble haiku:
(There was a time when young virgins who violated social norms were given public spankings.
It became common practice for maidens to pray for such paddling to cease, and now …)

A Fine Coup

Unwed girls’ mantras
go light on civil paddling.
Yes, spankings are out!

Take a disc of mirror colors,
Inflate to a ball that hovers
Hanging from ceiling,
Set it to reeling,
Spotlight it, and the wall it covers!

That one J-word reminded me of my second C&L

Fri 5/7/21
Upend,Ounce,Hairdo, Stigma;Pouring in
--------
Poor me, pour me another drink, was Chester's MANTRA
Play something on the jukebox. Orbison not Sinatra
How many ounces he'd had tonight ? Who's counting?
The better question. For what was his life amounting?

Despondent, he questioned just what did his life avail?
And who's the gal with the bouffant hairdo drinking ginger ale.
He never dreamed that she'd be the one to upend his dreary life
What she said to him cut to the core like a knife

"Do you have the courage to quit this lowly bar?
Come to an AA Meeting with me, don't fear the stigma".

WC

(I like "Orbison not Sinatra ")

"Wedding"

The couple were tired of being unwed
and decided to go ahead
with a civil ceremony--
legal, and not at all phony.

For their honeymoon they took a break
and on a boat paddled down the lake.
There a mantra they did chime:
"We'll stay married a long, long time.

I hadn't thought about O. Henry in years, but your verse this morning made me look him up, OMK. I didn't know his real name was William Sydney Porter, and that his O. Henry stories did include a figure named Cisco who was a 'bandito.' Apparently O. Henry may also have spent three years in prison as an embezzlement bandito at one time in his life. My goodness, the things I learn on this blog.

Wilbur, I loved your verse this morning--it's great to get a poem from you--especially one about 'pouring.' So glad that Chester turned out to have a responsible girlfriend who's going to get him to start going to AA meetings with her. A delight--please keep your poems coming, along with your Wordles.

Looks like WC's poem is a throwback, Misty, and that Chester (Chet) is still escorting Lois as his "responsible girlfriend."
Wilbur makes this clear in his opening sentence. We are still following the adventures of "C&L."

Misty ~ Glad I could reintroduce O. Henry to you. One of my fave radio programs when I was a kid was "The Cisco Kid." I can still hear the announcer's voice introducing "O. Henry's 'Cisco Kid' from out of the Old West..."
Only later did I become aware of him as the author of that Christmas story, "The Gift of the Magi."
At one point I started reading a number of his other short stories, searching for more radio material. I was hopeful because they are now in public domain. They all try for a "Magi"-style twist, but I could not find any others quite as good.

Ol' Man Keith, what an interesting story about your childhood radio experiences, and how they worked your way into becoming familiar with O. Henry. Hope you'll find more radio material as you explore the short stories of your past.
