The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Er....
Something seems wrong. The solution calls for 13 letters, but there are only 12 circled letters in the clue words.
I guess I'll try for the solution anyway, and see if I can backtrack to see what's going on.

OK, fellow solvers, I think I've got it now. After many forward moves & retrenches, many hesitations (akin to Cleo welcoming the asp while her maid balks!), I'm ready to commit.
Maybe others found it more easily?
It was confirmed for me when I saw the newspaper this a.m., in which there are THREE circled letters, not just two. The first box is also circled.
Whew. Good luck, all!

mea culpa, The online version blocks out the first square to indicate the cursor position, so I replace it with a normal square for our non-interactive picture. Today I carelessly replaced it with a blank instead of a circle.

BTW, the black dog is back. Shame with so many gold-digger words to shuffle, but I'd rather do nothing instead of a bad poem.
Also fell again and had to call EMPs to get me up again. No injury, much embarrassment.

Sorry to hear about the fall, Owen--take good care of yourself.
I have trouble with the fourth word and the Jumble solution in the LA Times, so any suggestions from you or Ol'Man Keith would be appreciated. Will be out to see "Harvey" at the Laguna Playhouse this afternoon, so may not check in again until evening.

Enjoy Harvey, Misty! It's a sweet old comedy. I remember Jimmy Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd from my Junior High days when, for a couple of months after the movie's release, we all pretended to have our very own invisible Pookas.
You were seeking a clue to the 4th word? Well, we wouldn't want it to be too easy, would we? -- as then we'd have to file us under "S" for "Simple."*

Just think of it as what you might use in place of a pen or pencil, or to play an old vinyl record.

Very sorry, man, to read of the Dog's return--and of your fall. Glad you were able to get help despite the "embarrassment."
I collapsed once (years ago now) in my kitchen, from low blood sugar. I was out cold for many minutes, then came to with a fireman bending over me and asking the day of the week.
Talk about embarrassing; I wasn't sure which day it was! I'm sure you were much more lucid than that.
He then asked who was president. Fortunately, this was in the early Obama days. I sometimes worry what happens these days in response to the president question...

Wasn't Elwood DOWD in the XW today?
A stylus is what's used on a smart-phone, not to be confused with a stylist who puts a chopstick in your hair!

Thanks, Ol'Man Keith. "Harvey" was a lot of fun, terrific set, huge cast, and great acting, and the story is a wonderful message about giving folks with mental issues a break, especially when they are sweet and caring people. However, I had to look up the Jumble--would never have gotten it otherwise since I'm not keen on the cartoon guys' profession.
